Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will fulfill fans’ long-held desire to be set in Japan, but Ubisoft believes now is the perfect time to make it.
I remember back in the days of Assassin’s Creed 2, fans of the series would ask Ubisoft to make a game set in Japan or even anywhere in Asia. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China eventually did that to some extent, but it would be years later, until 2024, when a game set in Japan, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, would appear in players’ hands. But if you ask the game’s art director Thierry Dansereau, it’s a good thing the studio waited until now to make the game, because it allows the developer to develop “next-generation features” that he feels are “much needed.”

“I think it’s a great time, though, because it allows us to really develop a new generation of functionality that I think is very much needed to take advantage of in an environment like this,” Dansereau said in an interview with Play Magazine (via GamesRadar). The developer went on to mention Assassin’s Creed’s “rich game-making history” and made it clear that Shadow was made “with the pillars of Assassin’s Creed in mind.” Although fans have been waiting for years for a game set in Japan, Dansereau said he believes “making settings like this is part of our natural evolution.”
Dansereau also gave a talk at Gamescom last month, which our own Dom also attended. There, the art director talked about how a big factor in helping Ubisoft bring Shadow to life is, well, the cloud, which you can read in more detail here.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will launch on November 15th and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
