The Joker is set to return in a new big-screen movie, “Joker: Pas de Deux,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and teaming up with a new character, Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. If you want to celebrate the release of a new movie with some reading material, these upcoming graphic novels will put a smile on your face.
First, you can get the pocket version of Joker for just $10. This is one of the new DC Compact Comics graphic novels, a reprint of the classic story by Lee Bermejo and Brian Azzarello. If you like your Clown Prince of Crime gritty and disturbing, you’ll have fun with this story as it takes the Joker back to the streets of Gotham and follows him through a night of revenge, murder, and mayhem.
Another great story told recently is Batman: Joker Year One . This story was written by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Andrea Sorrentino and Stefano Ne Starring an all-star team of artists including Stefano Nesi, it tells the story of what happens after the Red Hood falls into a vat of chemicals and emerges from the other side as a pale and dangerous figure.
Then there’s Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing, a 12-issue series in which supervillains wreak havoc across the DC Universe. In this full-length series, the Joker makes enemies in Gotham and Los Angeles and crosses paths with some of the biggest names in the DCU as he aims to complete his most bizarre plot yet.
The Joker Compendium is another solid story collection that bundles all 15 issues of James Tynion IV’s Joker saga with special one-off issues. The twist here is that this Joker series doesn’t reflect so much on his relationship with Batman, but rather his interactions with former Police Commissioner James Gordon, who joins a global manhunt to to capture—and possibly kill—the villainous ace. Sadly, things didn’t go well for Gordon, and he ended up being broken by the Joker in the process.
Joker: World is a fun story that begins with the villain realizing there’s a vast world for him to travel to and unleash his signature mayhem. 80 kills were made.
In addition to these graphic novels, there’s also a new Joker comic series that reimagines the Joker as Batman’s father. We’re not kidding.
These are just some of the new and upcoming Joker graphic novels you can read before Joker: Folie A Deux premieres on October 4.
