Prime Video has released the first trailer for the live-action Yakuza series, Yakuza , but don’t expect too much from it.
We’re currently in the age of video game adaptations, with TV series like The Last of Us and Fallout and movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie becoming huge successes. So it came as no surprise when Sega and Amazon announced Yakuza: Like a Dragon , the latest live-action version of the hit game series, last month. Now, at San Diego Comic-Con, Amazon has released the first trailer for the show, and it… doesn’t show us much. There’s plenty of footage this time around of protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, played by Takeuchi Ryoma, getting his signature tattoos done, and a few other shots of the men looking very serious – one even in tears – but it’s hard to get a sense of what the show would actually be like so.

The Yakuza series certainly has its serious moments, but it’s also filled with a lot of silliness, which this trailer sorely lacks. Still, there’s plenty of hope. The official synopsis for Yakuza: Like a Dragon explains: “Spanning the years 1995 to 2005, the series follows the lives of childhood friends and the impact of Kazuma Kiryu’s decisions. It was also announced that Kiryu’s main companion, Akira Nishikiyama (also known as Nishiki), will be played by Kento Kaku, a fearsome and unparalleled yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, responsibility, and humanity.

Takeuchi recently spoke about his feelings about portraying an iconic character like Kiryu, and how he tried to put his own style into The Dragon of Dojima. Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be available on Prime Video on October 24, where you can watch the first three episodes.
