While PC and PS5 owners have been loving the monkey-led mayhem in Black Myth: Wukong , Xbox players have been waiting for news. The game’s Xbox port was delayed earlier this year as developer Game Science “optimized the Xbox Series S/X version to meet our quality standards.” Since then, there has been no further talk.
So, what is the problem? Most believe this has something to do with trying to get the game to run on the weaker Xbox Series S, and according to this new report, it looks like that may be true.
According to insider eXtas1s, who is generally very reliable when it comes to discussing all things Game Pass, but not so much beyond that, the problem is that Black Myth has a memory leak. Please keep in mind that all quotes from eXtas1s have been translated and therefore may not be entirely accurate.
Speaking to people at Gamescom, eXtas1s said: “It has been reported that the game has a bug called a ‘memory leak’ that can cause severe crashes that affect the performance of the Xbox console. Due to this issue, the game has not passed Xbox’s bug detection testing and has beenwere previously postponed indefinitely until they managed to optimize Games from the X|S series.
eXtas1s went on to say that the game had failed Xbox certification twice.
Memory leaks occur when data is loaded into RAM but not properly cycled back, causing the RAM to become increasingly full.
The reason this sounds believable is that the PS5 version appears to be suffering from this issue as well. From my own experience, as well as numerous reports on Reddit, performance becomes worse the longer the game is running. To resolve this issue, the game needs to be closed properly. Some PC users have also noticed that the game takes up RAM.
This could cause problems for the Xbox Series S, as the console has 6GB less RAM than the Series X and PS5, meaning it will be affected by memory leaks more quickly. But this is pure speculation.
Regardless, Game Science’s continued silence on the Xbox version is a bit concerning.
