Even though Deadlock hasn’t officially been released yet, it’s doing extremely well, and now an early version of the game has been shared online.
Well done, Valve, your strategy paid off – despite pretending for a long time that deadlock wasn’t real while allowing people to invite any of their friends to play it, the game performed extremely well. Word of mouth has clearly helped the game go further, with the game peaking at 164,855 concurrent players on Steam this past weekend, according to SteamDB, an impressive number that puts it among the top players on Steam. Among the top 100 most popular games. One can only imagine how great it will be once it actually launches and everyone can play it without an invitation.

Before the game is officially announced, everything about it comes from leaks, and it seems like even though everyone can talk about it without getting banned, there are still going to be some leaks. Over the weekend, Reddit user DeathwingTheBoss once again shared an early look at the game, which at the time was called Neon Prime. Considering it’s been renamed twice since then (prior to Deadlock, it was also reportedly called the Citadel), this is definitely an early look, but even so, there’s clearly a lot of the same underpinnings there.

You’ll probably recognize some of the playable characters by their movements, even if they look slightly different, and there’s still a MOBA-like format and a Bioshock Infinite-like skyhook. Aesthetically, though, the game is more sci-fi/cyberpunk style, set on a futuristic, Japanese-style map, and to be honest, it doesn’t feel that much like the current 1900s-style games of Supernatural unique.
Valve’s final look is definitely much stronger and should help it stand out from the growing crowd of live shooters, but it’s also a Valve, so maybe it didn’t need that boost in the first place.
