War does no good. There is no peace in war. There is no happiness and no redemption in war. It only causes harm, seeks to kill, shed blood and tear families apart. Just thinking about how many lives have been lost in the pursuit of power is sickening. If this bothers you, William Tell provides the perfect validation for those feelings.

Directed by Nick Hamm, “William Tell” is an insightful and timely retelling of the legendary Swiss hero from the 14th century. With a stellar cast including Claes Bang, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jonathan Pryce and Rafe Spall, the film transcends mere historical drama. It becomes a powerful meditation on the devastation wrought by war and the irreparable damage it causes.

The story takes place in 1307, when the Swiss cantons were suffering from the oppressive rule of the Austrian Habsburg kings, a period Kingsley depicts with chilling authority. Under his brutal rule, the people fell into despair. In this atmosphere of fear and injustice, a lone farmer, consumed by thoughts of revenge, seeks help from the only man brave enough to stand up to the brutality: William Tell. Claes Bang stars as Tell, a battle-weary warrior who longs for peace with his family and a simple life, but is ultimately forced to fight against the injustice around him .

The film’s central theme—underscoring the futility and destructiveness of war—is presented with unflinching clarity. It does not shy away from depicting the true horrors of conflict, emphasizing that war brings no peace, no joy, and no redemption. Instead, it leaves only pain, loss, and a shattered life. Hamm’s direction is both energetic and thoughtful, utilizing sweeping visuals and tense pacing to emphasize the emotional and moral weight of each character’s choices.

The most striking scene in the film is when Thiel is forced to shoot an apple from his son’s head, a scene whose intensity will leave viewers breathless. It not only showcases Thiel’s extraordinary skills, but also the inhuman pressure exerted by those in power on ordinary people. This moment, like much of the film, reflects the immense human cost of resisting tyranny and the personal sacrifice required to fight for justice.

“William Tell” challenges viewers to look beyond myth and legend to see the true suffering that war brings to humanity. This is not a story of glorious battles or heroic deeds, but of a man who, despite his reluctance, chose to fight back when pushed beyond his limits.

For those sickened by the senseless loss of life caused by power, “William Tell” provides a powerful narrative that highlights the tragic consequences of war. It requires us to reflect on the true costs of conflict and recognize the importance of peace and justice. Through its honest portrayal of resistance and survival, this film is a powerful reminder that war in any form is a force that seeks only destruction, and that there is always an option to stand up for what is right, even in the darkest of times period.
