But the stakes appear higher this year and the divisions deeper than in previous years.

We probably don’t need to tell you that this election is unlike most.
In fact, we are in an unprecedented situation in several different ways.
We’ve had a failed debate, an assassination attempt, a sudden candidate switch, and now we’re (presumably) facing a different race than we expected just a few days ago.
There’s a lot to consider – and with all this real-world drama going on, the badminton championship match between Taiwan and Estonia might look a little less exciting than usual.

But the Trump-Harris matchup is unlike anything we’ve seen before — and for NBC, it couldn’t come at a better time.
NBC’s Gamble
Olympic ratings are notoriously difficult to predict, so there’s always some risk involved.

With entertainment options more plentiful than ever, the gamble is more dangerous than in summers past.
NBC has announced plans to protect its investment with celebrity guest appearances and “fast-paced coverage” aimed at capturing our TikTok-ified attention.
Even if we were in the middle of a real civil war, the Olympics would probably draw a sizable crowd.
But as many have pointed out, this year’s competition didn’t feature the big storyline of Michael Phelps winning a record number of medals.
So as NBC prepares for the most expensive broadcast in Olympic history, it may be hoping that this period in the United States is less tumultuous.
Indeed, candidates are not the only ones at risk of humiliation and public defeat.
