There’s nothing like a good horror movie to send shivers down your spine, or a cheesy movie to make you laugh with dark delight.
If you like the horror genre, you’ll get it all.
Shudder brings them to you—the good, the bad, and the ugly—all neatly collected in one place for your screaming—er, streaming—enjoyment.
The streaming service not only offers a plethora of horror movies and TV shows from past and present, including Hollywood and cult classics, but also delights viewers with a plethora of original programming.
The upcoming horror docu-series and the uber-popular variety show Joe Bob Briggs’ Last Drive-In are just two examples.
Add in original film credits like Late Night with the Devil, Christmas Bloody Christmas, and the rebooted V/H/S series, and it’s easy to see why Shudder is the king of horror streaming.
King of Horror Live
As a horror fan, my favorite thing about Shudder is that it’s all in one place.
With the abundance of streaming services and the vast libraries of movies and TV shows that go with them, sometimes finding something new to watch can turn into a living nightmare.
With Shudder, you know what you’re getting because it’s terrifying all the way through.
In other words, a horror lover’s dream come true.
Another added bonus is that sometimes you’ll find movies you forgot existed until they suddenly appeared while you were scrolling through Shudder’s movie catalog.
And because they change their collections regularly, there’s always something new to dig into, or an old favorite to revisit.
Their catalog is also curated by real people, which is a big plus in this age of artificial intelligence and computer-generated everything.
This means Shudder has something to watch, unlike some of the crap you get on other streaming services when you click on horror movies or shows that look appealing but aren’t.
Watch a movie with friends
One of the most fun ways to view the Shudder collection is to watch Joe Bob Briggs and his Last Drive-In show.
He’s a staple of Shudder, but I never bothered to check him out until recently, and wow, that’s awesome.
I honestly didn’t think I would like this show because I thought it would be similar to Mystery Science Theater and people were talking about the movie, but it wasn’t.
It’s a bit like Svengoolie or Elvira, but better. Seriously.
Along with Darcy the Postman Girl, he performs his little tricks before, during and after whichever movie he decides to show.
Some of the movies are classics and cult films that you’ve already seen.
There are other movies you may have never heard of, so being able to discover new ones this way is an added bonus.
Even if you don’t like this movie, you’ll have some fun with it because of the way Joe Bob Briggs presents it.
The final drive-in theater was set up like a late-night talk show, and sometimes he would have guests, including the cast of whatever movie was being shown.
But the most interesting thing is the interaction between Joe Bob and Darcy.
He’s very blunt and she’s very “innocent,” especially when she’s angry about things like rabbit hunting.
Is it tacky? certainly.
But Joe Bob provided such interesting insights into the upcoming movie that you’ll think Watch with him, and stick around to see what other knowledge he decides to share during the break.
His signature and a highlight of the show is “Drive-In Totals,” where he summarizes noteworthy moments throughout the film, including kills, strange happenings, body parts, and other fun facts and trivia.
It’s like a little game you can play with yourself as you watch and see if you can catch everything he points out.
Briggs’ popularity stems from two similar shows he previously hosted: “Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater” (which aired on the Movie Channel from 1986 to 1996) and “MonsterVision” ” (aired on TNT from 1996 to 2000).
More than a decade after MonsterVision was canceled, Shudder restored the series to its current form.
Joining Briggs in his new venture is his massive fan base.
In 2018, when he hosted a 24-hour live movie marathon to launch a new series, it was so popular that Shudder’s live stream crashed.
None of this is new, but it’s another example of the gems found on Thriller.
Even if you think you won’t like it, you might be surprised, like me, and I’ve been a Shudder subscriber for a while.
Terror until I die
If Joe Bob Briggs isn’t your thing, but you still want to watch horror TV, Shudder has you covered, too.
Popular series like Hannibal, Quest for Witches, Chucky, Stan vs. Evil, Preacher, and more are just one click away, all collected in one neat space.
If you love anthology series as much as I do, Creepshow, based on the 1982 film (based on the EC comic of the same name), is a must-see.
Sometimes these little mini-movies are more creepy than the full-length feature.
Documentary series like The 101 Scariest Movie Moments of All Time are not only a great way to reminisce about your favorite horror movie moments while listening to industry professionals share them, but you might also discover some you never knew existed New movies.
I found so many gems while watching this series.
Likewise, Shudder’s upcoming Horror’s Greatest, produced by the same team as The 101 Scariest Movie Moments of All Time, will take a deep dive into the most iconic horror films of all time across a variety of subgenres.
Directors, actors, writers, and others will discuss their must-see films and share why we should see them, too, if we haven’t seen them yet.
These types of shows can generate a lot of heated discussion among horror fans, whether it’s watching them in places like Reddit or in your living room with your horror fan friends.
“The Scariest” will premiere on August 27th.
A movie you can’t put down
Of course, Shudder’s bread and butter is its movies.
In addition to an ever-changing selection of Hollywood films, foreign horror films, and cult classics, their original films are well worth a look.
There are so many movies to choose from and so many to recommend that if I listed all my favorites we would be here for days.
However, there is one film that is very much worth mentioning and worth watching even though it’s not an original Thriller movie, and that’s #ChadGetsTheAxe.
This 2023 film is directed by Travis Bible and I would never have known it existed without Shudder.
A group of social media influencers decided to visit an abandoned house that was once used by a satanic cult.
On the surface, it looks corny.
While it does have some corny moments, it’s a surprisingly good movie about the horrors of social media.
It’s not necessarily scary, but it’s creepy in a weird way and very engaging until the end.
a movie yes The terrifying and mind-bending horror extravaganza is the original Tremors movie, Late Night with the Devil , released this April.
The show follows a late-night talk show host played by David Dastmalchian on Halloween night in 1977 who thinks he can save his failing show by bringing in a supposedly possessed girl.
Late Night with the Devil is unpredictable, completely exciting, and one of the best examples of a horror lover’s dream come true.
