Lionsgate Borderlands The film was released on August 9, but the film’s review embargo was broken on Thursday, and early reactions from critics have been terrible.

Eli Roth’s film is a live-action adaptation of Gearbox Software’s popular video game series, set on the planet Pandora and following the story of a group of misfit outlaws. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis, and stars Jack Black as the voice of a wisecracking robot.

As of Thursday evening, the review aggregation site’s ratings were shocking Borderlands. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film only has a 6% rating (45 reviews). Thankfully, the audience score so far on Rotten Tomatoes is significantly higher at 51%. On Metacritic, it has a critic score of 29 based on 23 reviews, and things aren’t much better on Letterboxd, where users gave Borderlands Score 2.1/5.

Below are key excerpts from some of the most notable early reviews.

in his negative comments hollywood reporter, David Rooney writes: “The greatest mystery [with Borderlands] That’s how a film so loud and pointless attracts such a cast. David focuses on what went wrong with the film, highlighting the significant changes during production. “To be fair, projects signed by Blanchett and other big names might look a little different, given the number of screenwriters the scripts have passed through. The most notable of which is Craig Mazin, who is the last of usHe reportedly chose to remove his name from the project. Credit for the screenplay ultimately went to Roth and first-time actor Joe Crombie, who some speculate was a pseudonym.

in sporadic comments new york postJohnny Oleksinski writes Borderlands For an actor like Cate Blanchett, this is a serious misstep. “If I were a two-time Oscar winner, I would hire a crack team working around the clock to remove all mention of it from the Internet. This movie is so embarrassing,” Oleksinski wrote . The critic was not in any way impressed, writing “about Borderlands Shocking: acting, writing, directing, design.

Jake Kleinman, for inverseequally harshly Borderlands. “The motivations don’t matter, the characters are paper thin, and the plot moves as fast as the player clicking through the dialogue to get to the next level,” Kleiman wrote. He added: “On the other hand, it’s impossible to cast Cate Blanchett in an action epic and not make it look at least a little bit fun; it’s impossible.” The age of CGI, Borderlands Earn points for creating a vibrant post-apocalyptic environment. It all adds up to a shame Guardians of the Galaxy There are worse jokes out there.

in his comments daily beastan angry Nick Shag wrote in his article: “Cate Blanchett, what are you doing?” After a string of brilliant video game adaptations, Shag was confident of ending the streak Borderlands. “Gearbox Software’s games were less story-heavy and more action-heavy, and Roth doubled down on that formula, only to find it dull,” Schager writes. “Lacks the emotional depth, narrative creativity and wry humor of James Gunn’s beloved [Guardians of the Galaxy]Roth’s big-budget adventure was propelled solely by borrowed ideas and stale execution, both of which caused it to crash and burn in spectacular fashion.

written in new york timesAmy Nicholson’s response to ” Borderlandssuggesting that much of the film’s confusion was due to production issues. Nicholson didn’t condemn the film outright, but was disappointed nonetheless. “You can see the jokes, but most of them don’t land. Still, if you look closely, you’ll find some clever design work. Cheesy promotional posters enduring this nonsense like warriors.

In what could charitably be described as mixed reviews, empireDan Jolin of Guardians of the Galaxybut does capture “some” of the magic of the Marvel Universe trilogy. Overall, however, the script doesn’t work. “Rose and co-writer Joe Crombie had neither Gunn’s intelligence nor Gunn’s wit. The wisecracks were out (“I’m naturally humorous, so I’d take it as a witty joke,” by Jack chirps the annoyingly hipster robot voiced by Blake), the range of emotional resonance feels stretched (Blanhett’s Lilith has mommy issues, you’d know), and the team dynamic is off balance.

In another mixed review, colliderTaylor Gates thinks Borderlands The film has some positives, including the performances from Ariana Greenblatt, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, but it’s ultimately the flaws that drag it down. “Borderlands It’s an action-adventure movie at its core, and there’s no doubt it contributes in that regard. The action scenes — especially the hand-to-hand combat and acrobatic fight choreography — are fantastic,” Gates wrote. “The movie also suffers in terms of pacing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to have a movie run in two hours – most movies these days don’t seem to be able to do that – but the plot is resolved The pace feels rushed rather than efficient, and the breakneck pace sacrifices clarity and much-needed tension and stakes.

Despite the score of 2/5, The GuardianJesse Hassenger’s feelings Borderlands Chaos. Hassenger applauds Blanchett’s attempt to transcend the physical. Dressed in sparkling gear and sporting bright red hair, Blanchett deserves credit for not backing down from such a daunting task. Instead of rolling her eyes like Dakota Johnson, she tried to swagger through it—but wasn’t entirely successful, in part because the material really started sputtering before the halfway mark. Alas, Hassenger felt the film didn’t really know what it was, “with its juvenile humor, fast pace and erratic treatment of adult emotions. Borderlands It ends up being like a children’s movie, too violent for kids to actually watch.
