It’s been more than 30 years since the release of “Dookie,” the album that made Green Day famous, and to celebrate, the band has…unpacked it?
In the world of video games, we all know about remakes, in fact we probably know too much about them now. Some musicians occasionally put out new versions of old albums, even if just to improve the sound quality a little, but to celebrate Dookie’s 30th anniversary, Green Day decided to unpack it. “When an album reaches a major milestone like its 30th anniversary, it’s remastered in its usual format,” reads the trailer introducing Dookie Demastered.
“But ‘Dookie’ is no ordinary album. Rather than smoothing its edges and tweaking its dynamic range, this version of ‘Dookie’ has been carefully transformed to fit the lo-fi of everything from wax cylinders to answering machines to toothbrushes.” degree format.

You might be thinking “this is ridiculous” and you’d be right, but yes, Green Day have actually put 15 of Dookie’s tracks on 15 different techniques, old and new. For example, the most famous song on the album, “Basket Case,” was put into the Big Mouth Billie Bass, you know, that funny singing fish for two minutes. There’s also Have A Blast on floppy disk, which you can listen to on a website that uncompresses the album, and it sounds like the highest 144p thing out there.
Perhaps most interestingly, they put “Welcome to Paradise,” another classic song from the album, on the original Game Boy. Unfortunately for you, you don’t have a chance to get it right now, as you have to enter a lottery to win it, and there are only 25 copies of the Game Boy cartridge. Hopefully one of these 25 winners (who, oddly enough, actually still have to pay for it) shares it with the rest of us to get a closer look at it.
My personal favorite is the Longview Doorbell, and there’s only one of it, so I’m sure whichever Green Day fan gets this doorbell will feel a little smug every time it’s delivered.
