Sydney Sweeney is ready to step into the ring.
The actress shared several behind-the-scenes photos (below) of her from the filming of the Christy Martin biopic, in which she will star.
“Well thanks to some dads in the bush that spilled the beans so here are some bts from the movie I’m filming right now,” she wrote in the caption of two photos on Instagram in which she Wearing a sweatshirt and having curly brown hair. “Over the past few months, I have been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman – a true champion who fought inside and outside the ring.”
She concluded: “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I am honored to be able to share her story with you on her behalf. More to come soon.”
David Michôd will direct the as-yet-untitled film, which tells the true story of Martin’s rise to become one of America’s most famous female boxers in the 1990s. Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Ethan Embry and Katie O’Brien also star in the biopic.
Martin’s career began in 1989 after she met her manager and eventual husband, Jim Martin. She continued to compete until 2012 and is to date the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Boxing Magazine. sports illustrated.
But the life of an athlete is not always easy. In 2010, her husband stabbed her multiple times and shot her in the chest, killing her. She managed to muster up the courage to run out of her home and flag down passers-by, who rushed her to hospital. Two years later, Jim Martin was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder with a firearm.
The boxer told CBS News that his abuse of her took many forms, including sexual and emotional abuse. She explained that he got her addicted to cocaine and kept her supplied. He also blackmailed her and threatened to reveal her sexual orientation.
“The whole sex part was really difficult because I was so intertwined,” she told the network. “First of all, I trust Jim Martin, he’s 25 years older than me. He’s my coach. I feel like this is a guy that I can open my heart to, bear my soul to, tell him about my sexual struggles, my Struggles with my family, struggles with life, and all of that was used against me.
