feature film war on venus There’s a special air of nostalgia in the UK and US, at least among fans old enough to remember the time. Akira It’s a “new” thing. After Otomo’s movie was released, war on venus The first batch of sci-fi action anime released on the market as anime in these areas. In the UK, it was one of the first releases from Manga Entertainment A-Ko plan, Dominate Tank Police and Fist of the North Star. (You can see how all of these titles work together as a “brand” in this vintage video trailer.)
war on venus There are more specific Akira Compare. This is a science fiction action adventure film. The main story takes place on the terraformed Mars, where two nations are at war, and several characters are forced to fight when their cities are invaded. Many of the protagonists are young men riding motorcycles—well, type Motorcycles, although they only have a single oversized wheel, are technically motorized unicycles. As other experts have pointed out, focus hero Young Man — er, Hiro — could be mistaken for AkiraGoldfields in some shots. when he appears in a crimson bike.
war on venus Released in Japanese theaters in March 1989, less than a year later Akira, it was a beneficiary of the country’s bubble economy at that time. and Akira, you can feel its larger budget in the rich textures and colors, as well as the vast amounts of flying rubble and puffs of smoke. There’s a chase scene worth watching early on Akira; The story begins with Hiro scuffling with the police and builds until he escapes from an armored vehicle through a roller coaster of metal pipes and stairs.
war on venus Probably affected Akira —If it’s not a recent movie, then it’s Katsuhiro Otomo’s popular comic book series from 1982. Akira The TV series seems to reference the comics Gundam ZZ,already Akira Movie. but after war on venus It also draws on the traditions established by the first Gundam series, dating back to 1979. war on venus‘s creator is Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who was the series’ character designer and animation director.
As in Gundam, war on venus is a sci-fi adventure, the point is Humanity conflict. There are no alien invaders, and many of the war images feel very close to real news. Throughout its decades of development, Gundam Audiences are often asked to imagine how you If your home, your city, was bombed mercilessly during a war, you would feel it. The first one is like this Gundam The film opens with a military attack on a space colony, shown through the eyes of school-aged young people fleeing the carnage. Much later Gundam The series starts the same way – Gundam SeedFor example.
war on venus Arguably more “meaty” than them, but there are some details that might hit harder. After all, much of the film isn’t set in a space colony, but in a largely first-world city where ordinary life is destroyed not by giant robots but by artillery fire and tanks. The setting may be a terraformed Mars, but it’s easy to project yourself into the setting and by extension the real-life war it entails. For viewers of the film in the 1990s, that might have been Srebrenica, Bosnia, where a Japanese critic discovered a mural AkiraKaneda frowned. Thirty years on, you may be reminded of the recent horrific events in Gaza.
If that sounds too heavy for a cheesy action movie, consider the scene where Hiro angrily rants about the lies perpetrated by “his” government, while his naive girlfriend covers her ears and says she doesn’t want to know. It may be embarrassingly sexist mansplaining, but the message remains simple; question the narrative propagated by those in power (another favorite theme Gundam). Indeed, the anti-authority moments are almost immediately replaced by hilariously awkward scenes of teenage desire – this time, it’s the boy, not the girl, in a state of undress.
war on venus This is Yasuhiko’s third animated film as director, following the 1983 sci-fi action film Crusher Joeand 1986 Arion, a wonderful reinvention of Greek mythology. Both Arion and war on venus Adapted by Yasuhiko from his own manga, the music is by the same composer Joe Hisaishi. Yes, That Joe Hisaishi is best known for his work with Hayao Miyazaki. his war on venus The soundtrack here has an aggressive ’80s feel to it that may make viewers love it or hate it, but there’s a lot more to it than that. The deafening piano sound during the scene with Hiro and his girlfriend, for example, has the romanticism Hisaishi longed for; it’s on the same continuum as his work Laputa and Robot Carnival.
at last, Gundam Fans should notice another small connection to the franchise. Lieutenant Kurtz eventually becomes Hiro’s boss and rival in the movie, voiced by Shuichi Ikeda. Until then war on venus Upon its release, Ikeda became known for playing one of the most iconic characters in SF anime – GundamThe Shire.
