To say Top Gun: Maverick is a hit in 2022 would be an understatement. The film has a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has grossed a whopping $1.5 billion worldwide after becoming one of the longest theatrical releases in the post-pandemic era. Of course, Paramount Pictures wants to keep the current series going, but Tom Cruise has a bit of a scheduling problem. Now, “Twister” co-star Glen Powell (who had a major supporting role in “Maverick”) is giving us some hope that the trilogy might be releasing sooner rather than later.
Powell wasn’t involved in rumors online earlier this year about a hit trilogy from Paramount and Skydance. Now, however, his tone has changed (via Variety ), seeming to indicate that things are starting to move quickly.

“I mean, I have a date,” Powell said of returning as a fighter in “Top Gun 3” on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with “Twister” costar Daisy Edgar-Jones Shi said. Whether that means he starts physical preparation before filming or goes back to pilot school remains to be seen, but it’s worth noting since everyone thinks the next Top Gun will take a while to get off the ground. In fact, producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently told everyone to calm down.
“Something interesting will be announced soon…but it’s confidential from me. I’m working with [Joseph] kosinski, cruise and jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. Something is happening that sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I will go back… I’m sure there will be a plane waiting for me at some point in the future. It will be ready for immediate use, which started back in 2018 and is quite difficult considering all the training and preparation required.
The expectation for the trilogy was that the younger characters, led by Miles Teller and Powell himself, would become more important and take some of the narrative burden off Cruise’s shoulders. That said, the 62-year-old madman is expected to stay. For now, we’re just waiting for him to wrap up his eighth Mission: Impossible movie, which has hit various roadblocks on its way to the big screen despite initially being planned to follow last summer’s Mission: Impossible movie .
