Mattel and TOKYOPOP have signed an agreement to develop original comic book-style graphic novels for children ages 8 to 12, featuring the globally beloved Barbie and Hot Wheels brands.

The first releases will debut in 2026 and include a Western-style comic series based on Hot Wheels and new stories featuring the Barbie character. The graphic novels will showcase fresh artwork and original narratives designed to appeal to a new generation of fans.

“Hot Wheels and Barbie have long been symbols of storytelling, creativity and inspiration, engaging audiences of all generations,” said Ryan Ferguson, global head of publishing for Mattel.

“Hot Wheels and Barbie are two of the world’s most popular toy and entertainment brands, and we are excited to partner with Mattel to develop and publish new original comic-style graphic novels,” commented Marc Visnick, Chief Operating Officer and Publisher of TOKYOPOP road. “Adding Barbie and Hot Wheels to our roster brings an exciting dimension, and we look forward to sharing these legendary brands and bold new adventures with a global audience.”

The partnership builds on Mattel’s recent publishing efforts, including the launch of its own brand in 2024, with Simon & Schuster as its distribution partner. Hot Wheels and Barbie continue to lead the industry as symbols of creativity, empowerment and innovation.
