Tom Cruise has been playing a super-human being who regularly saves the world for years, and now he’s jumping ship from Paramount to Warner Bros. … to play a super-human being who’s about to save the world.
On Friday, Deadline provided a brief synopsis of Cruise’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled film with Alejandro G. Iñàrritu. According to the outlet, the film focuses on “the most powerful man in the world” who, after bringing disaster to the world, is tasked with proving his worth and preventing it. It’s a very ominous premise, most importantly because it’s not clear what said destruction is yes And whether he intended to make it public in the first place. What makes Cruise’s character the most powerful of them all? We’ll have to wait and find out.
In addition to the story synopsis, Deadline also revealed a bunch of actors joining the film. Our supporting cast includes Anatomy of a Fall Sandra Wheeler, Killers of the Flower Moon Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde (talk to me), John Goodman (justice gem) and Michael Stuhlbarg (bones and all). Riz Ahmed has another potential opportunity (Nimona), is said to be currently in negotiations for the project. Like everything else about the film, their roles in the story are kept closely guarded secret.
Whatever Iñárritu and Cruise’s movie is, it’s going to be a big deal. Cruise partnered with Warner Bros. in January to develop and produce original films and franchise films. As the first film in this new endeavor, it marked an important moment in his career. Maybe this will lead to him revisiting some fan-favorite films, or maybe he tries to challenge himself with newer material. Regardless, let’s be interested to see what he does next on the big screen.
