Uh-oh, the Borderlands movie is off to an extremely rocky start, with box office numbers pointing to all signs of failure.
I think it’s safe to say that Borderlands is a very popular series, right? Do we all agree? It has to be, otherwise the idea of a film adaptation would be unthinkable. The film has been in development since 2015, which has been a sign of a hit, and after nearly a decade in development, it finally hit theaters last week. How about it? Well, I gave it one star in my review because I couldn’t find anything to like about it at all. It earned $8.8 million domestically, with $7.7 million coming from international sales, which paints a clear picture of: “Yeah, we’re fine, thank you.” Variety also noted that sources say the film is close to 60% of production costs were covered by international pre-sales, but this was still well below expectations. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be getting a sequel, at least not anytime soon – the game may have to salvage the series’ image a bit.
Speaking of these games, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford recently spoke about future installments, and while he didn’t exactly confirm Borderlands 4, he did say that the developer “won’t “Let people wait a long time before we announce it.”
