For this week’s Best Comics to Buy for December 11th, I found myself sorting through no less than four (four!) Christmas and/or winter-themed horror anthology books, which made me wonder if there’s a fair proportion of comics out there Creators are spending their July or August deep in vacation mode. But I digress. Below you’ll find my five favorite books of the week, along with the usual list of releases…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on December 11, 2024
Hall of Fear #1
writer: Jordan Hart and Chris Riel
artist: Lee Ferguson, Jimmy Kukaj, Walter Parks and Fabio Vilas
Letters and colors: Jordan Hart
Publisher: Picture Comics – Syzygy Publishing
The perfect holiday stocking stuffer – a collection of scary stories to read by the light of a Yule Log, “Beware of Fear!” Long before Americans celebrated the spooky on Halloween, people in the Victorian Era gathered around their fireplaces on Christmas Eve . Halls of Fear honors this spooky tradition by wishing you and your family a “Happy Holidays” with tales of ghosts, scary monsters, and evil creatures. Covers from in-demand artist Maria The Wolf, Marguerite Sauvage, wrapping paper variations from Jordan Hart, and holiday tribute covers from Lee Ferguson will have you spreading the fear of the season in spooky holiday style!
Why it’s cool: Of the holiday-themed selections coming out this week, this is my favorite. There was a palpable sense of insane joy. I mean, just look at the cover Maria Wolf. Yes, there’s a big scary monster, but what’s even more interesting is that the gingerbread man (and his facial expressions) is captured by the monster, and I found this cheeky, unabashed seasonal mischief to be present throughout the book. These stories are written by Chris Riel and Jordan Hart, This gives the one-shot a nice sense of coherence as it jumps between artists, characters and concepts. Overall, I had a great time and highly recommend this.

FMML #2
writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
artist: david lopez
Colorist: Chris Peter
Writer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: dark horse comics
As Portland smolders, an airplane door falls from the sky, sending Riley’s mom into a trauma-induced brooding. This leads to a bizarre encounter with physicist Richard Feynman and ends with a group of middle-aged riot girls coming together to solve a murder that haunts them all. Meanwhile, the school conducts a dystopian shooting drill, with Riley’s monstrous form protecting his peers, casting a comical light on modern horror.
Why it’s cool: I’m happy to report that after an absolutely brilliant first issue, the book has received or even better For question #2. FML In this second issue, it feels like a wonderfully personal story told with captivating art and just the right amount of great acting. I can’t wait for more.

Bloom #1
writer: Michael W. Conrad
artist: John J. Pearson
Art assistance: Lora Bonatto
letter: Pat Brosseau
Publisher: Prosperity! studio
In this revolutionary new world, Agent Spears finds herself investigating a series of mysterious murders, a chain of violent events that leads her to a terrifying question on which the fate of every creature hangs.
Why it’s cool: I think I’ve read the first issue of every recent comic John J. Pearson has drawn on this list. Pearson’s work has such a great sense of storytelling. In this new book, it features an excellent script by Michael W. Conrad and a brilliant high concept. This is the global squiggle horror murder mystery you don’t want to miss.

Ultimate Universe—One Year #1
writer: Haiyingwith backup Chris Condon
artist: Jonas Sharpwith backup Alessandro Cappuccio
Colorist: Mattia Iaconowith backup Brian Valenza
Writer: Travis Lanham
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Deniz Camp turns the ULTIMATES narrative on its head and takes us inside the Maker Board! The heroes of the Ultimate Universe aren’t the only ones preparing for the return of the Creator, and the clock is ticking… This unique one-shot sets the stage for the second year of the Ultimate series, including the debut of Ultimate versions of two major Marvel characters !
Why it’s cool: This comic is a really fun way to remind readers of what’s going on in the new Ultimate Universe. It’s a fun standalone story with a few twists (which I won’t spoil here), but within it, it’s also a good catch-up issue. One of the things I find great about these books is that they are very compact and streamlined, without which questions like this would not be possible. I really enjoyed it, both as an individual comic and as part of a wider series of books that work really well.

Warm Fusion #1
writer: Scott Hoffman
artist: Alberto Ponticelli
Colorist: Lee Loveridge
Writer: Steve Wants
Publisher: DSTLRY
More than two decades later, New York City is devastated by crime, ongoing storms, radiation from the Times Square terror incident, and genetic mutations caused by life-saving “cure.” After a series of murders in a city brothel, an escort named Vin Young, who plays Snow White and is one of a generation of deformed victims, decides to help find the killer, reluctantly joining forces with Jarrod Hanover He is the only police officer responsible for the case.
Why it’s cool: i absolutely love Alberto Ponticelli Work, any new Ponticelli book is a must read for me. I found the game engaging, stylish, and a bit technical in a very fun way. Also, between this and the choices above, I think it’s pretty clear that I’m nothing if not a sucker for body horror murder mysteries.
