Ekos is a new concept but also an old one, with new players from the comics who are actually veteran players teaming up with long-time players.
If this sounds confusing, it’s Comics 2024.
But let’s break it down: Ekos is a new universe inspired by through art and creation Michael Turner and Geoff Jonesproduced by the founder of Marvel Studios, David Messer.
Turner was a beloved artist who sadly passed away in 2008, leaving behind a rich body of work… and some ideas that were never fully developed. Now, Messer is working with Aspen Comics, founded by Turner, to bring one of those ideas, Ekos, to life. After Turner’s death, Aspen continues operations with co-owners Frank Mastromaro and Peter Steigerwald Keep characters like Fathom alive. But now they have a whole new environment.
The first Ekos series stars Grell – who first appeared in a comic written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Turner back in 2003 – as he sets out to explore the world of Ekos. Along the way he meets many beloved characters from Michael Turner’s works, including Aspen (fathom) and Grace (Soul Fire), They join forces with Grell on a common mission.

I actually had the opportunity to work with David Messer Ekos was almost unavoidable at San Diego Comic-Con, as the artwork was on the portal everyone needed to sign in to enter the show and loomed high above the show floor at the Aspen booth. A legend in his own right, Maisel came up with the idea for Marvel Studios and used the characters themselves as collateral to strike a risky deal to fund the first Marvel movies. Since executive production Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor As well as other films that launched the Marvel Universe, Messer worked on the Angry Birds movies and won a Broadway Tony Award yes. Clearly he has nothing to prove…but regardless, he’s getting back to business with Ekos. As a self-proclaimed lifelong comics fan, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I brought Iron Man here [to SDCC] 2007, so it’s kind of similar to what I was doing at the time,” he told me of Ekos’ heavy presence at the 2024 conference. “I have been collecting Michael’s art for 16 years. When James Cameron let rights expire For all these attributes, Frank [Mastromauro] Just call me and I jump in!
as THR reveals the projectMythos founded Mythos Studios as a new production company a few years ago, and Acquired 50% stake in Aspen Developing Ekos and Grell. “During COVID-19, we came up with the idea of building a universe that included all of these characters, including Grell, and that was exciting to me, unlike my kids at Marvel and everything else that was going on. ” Messer told me.
Messer was very interested in exploring the animation of the final Ekos film. “The visual look, the DNA of the universe will be very close to what Michael and Peter Steigerwald were doing over 20 years ago. When you watch a movie or a graphic novel or a theme park ride, it visually looks like you’re part of the world. It’s It’s exciting for me, because I couldn’t do that in a live-action Marvel movie, but now, because of what I’m doing, I have more options where we can go straight to the movies first, or whatever. But I love comics. Frank loves comics, Peter loves comics, and the root of it all comes from where we are now and Michael’s love for comics.
Launching the book on Kickstarter allowed them to connect with consumers. “I like that we can talk [readers] Directly,” Messer said. “When Kevin [Feige] “When I was making Marvel, the only time we talked to fans was at Comic-Con in Hall H. Now with Kickstarter, we can talk to people year-round and they can get involved with us.”
With that in mind, here are three covers by Turner and Steigerwald. Stay tuned for more news about Ekos in the coming days.
