Steam is seeing some big changes today, and one in particular means the success of both paid games and free-to-play games soaring up the Steam charts. When grouped together, these two categories might interfere with each other, but now they are separated for easier browsing.
If you launch Steam now, you should see a new tab on the store page called “Trending Free”! This will be filled with free games, demos and benchmarking tools currently popular on digital storefronts. As for your New & Trending tab, it should now be filled with premium games, including some that would otherwise be hidden beneath the free content.

This is actually great for Steam and its users for two reasons. First, let’s take a look at the Black Myth: Wukong benchmark demo, which is performing well so far. Previously, it would have had a place on Steam’s main New & Trending tab. But this isn’t a game, really. This is a test demo so people can make sure their devices can run the game and see how well they run the game. Now, this benchmark demo still gets attention in its own tab, but it doesn’t occupy actual game.
Plus, if you’re specifically looking for the hottest new free games on Steam, you’re just one tab away from finding exactly what you’re looking for. Instead of scrolling through a bunch of new $60 AAA releases, you can get a specific tab that only offers free experiences. A win-win situation.
