It turns out that a Watch Dogs movie is in the works and has actually finished filming.
Like the Minecraft movie and the Borderlands movie, the Watch Dogs movie has been in the works for about ten years, although it’s not as close to the Minecraft movie that finally received a trailer last week as it was to The Borderlands movie that came out was different. In fact, we haven’t really seen anything yet, despite a few casting news earlier this year and some this week. Ubisoft then sent out a tweet confirming that, um, filming on the Watch Dogs movie adaptation is completely complete, although I seem to be overlooking the fact that production has already begun.

I guess that’s what happens when Ubisoft spends 10 years trying to make a movie – there’s only so long before anyone pays attention to the production schedule. Apparently, Ubisoft did announce production for this summer, but again, there hasn’t been a game in four years (AAA game industry is fine, thank you for asking), so general awareness of the series isn’t exactly high for the time being.

Ubisoft has taken a bit of a hit lately as its stock price plummeted last week, leading one investor to write to the company saying it wants the developer to go private in order to “breathe new life” into Ubisoft’s games – which includes more Layoffs are clearly the way to make great games (via Rock Paper Shotgun). The letter specifically noted that Watch Dogs is a game that has been “sleeping for many years” despite being “loved by millions of players around the world.” As far as everyone knows, a new Watch Dogs game has yet to be developed, which is an odd choice considering the movie is about to be released.
The film’s release date has yet to be confirmed, and just like the game, Watch Dogs’ release date is also up in the air. You just have to replay them in the meantime.
