What you need to know:
- “Samurai Champloo” aired in 2004 and was a groundbreaking animation directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. The play seamlessly blends historical drama and hip-hop elements to create a unique visual and musical experience that has attracted both anime and hip-hop fans and won praise at home and abroad.
- Director Watanabe, known for his deep appreciation of music, selected four well-known hip-hop artists for the project: Nujabes, fat jon, FORCE OF NATURE and Tsuutchie. Their compositions for Samurai Champloo were released on four CDs – “departure”, “masta”, “impression” and “playlist” – and became smash hits. They were re-released on vinyl in 2022, with sales of the vinyl version reaching an impressive 20,000 copies and maintaining their popularity to this day.
- Now, in 2024, the 20th anniversary of the Samurai Champloo telecast, the soundtracks will finally be available on music subscription services around the world. Since CDs are currently difficult to purchase and a record player is required to listen to vinyl records, this release will make the sound source easily accessible to fans at home and abroad.
