The next Battlefield game returns to a modern setting and makes other key fan-requested changes

Electronic Arts has revealed new details about the next Battlefield game, confirming a modern setting and revealing that the game will drop features from Battlefield 2042 that divided fans.

EA revealed in an IGN report that while recent Battlefield games took place in World War I, World War II, and the future, the new Battlefield game takes place in the modern day. The first piece of concept art (see below) depicts a European city straddling land and sea, with fires sweeping through nearby forests. The scene looks very chaotic, in line with the feel of a traditional battlefield.

Additionally, the new Battlefield game will say goodbye to features from Battlefield 2042 that fans were quick to vocally dislike. The map launched in “Battlefield 2042” supports up to 128 players, which is a new level of scale never seen in the Battlefield series. But fans didn’t like it because the matches could feel hollow, and the developers eventually reinstated 64-player matches. The next Battlefield game will settle on a number that’s “more similar” to what past Battlefield games have offered.

“Yeah, 128 players, does that make the game more fun? Like… numbers for numbers’ sake don’t mean anything,” said Battlefield boss Vince Zampella. “We’re testing around the most interesting content. We’re designing something that’s more akin to previous Battlefield games. I’d rather have nice, dense, really nice, well-designed game spaces. Some of them are really cool. I I Can’t wait for you to see some of them.

Battlefield fans have also expressed their dissatisfaction with the “specialist” role in Battlefield 2042 that replaces the traditional class system. Zampella, who had not joined EA until this decision was made, expressed his appreciation for DICE trying new things. But he stressed that Specialists – who were later dumped from Battlefield 2042 in a post-launch update – would not be returning.

“I didn’t play in 2042. I don’t know what the reasoning was, but to me it was like the team tried something new,” he said. “You have to applaud the effort. Not everyone likes it, but you have to try something. It doesn’t work. It doesn’t fit. The experts don’t come back. So classes are the core of Battlefield and we’re going to come back to at this point.

In the interview, Zampella also stressed that while Call of Duty is a competitor to Battlefield, he believes both series offer something unique to their fanbases.

“We’re not trying to beat Call of Duty. We’re making something different, we’re making something that’s our own,” he said, acknowledging that the new Battlefield game “has the potential” to outsell Mission. call”.

It’s still relatively early days, and there’s no word yet on when the new Battlefield game will be released, though reports suggest it could be released as early as October 2025. Testing program for the Battlefield game.

“That’s the core of what we have to do – get the community back on our side and regain trust,” he said. Whether this is some kind of open or closed test, or a different type of test, remains to be seen.
