In short, the best comics to buy this week, September 25th, are a group of books that feature many excellent monsters, from classics to tentacle monsters to fantasy. Who doesn’t love a good monster comic? Especially this time of year with Halloween right around the corner. You can check out five of my favorites below, as well as the usual other lists…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on September 24th
Goobers #1
writer: Cody Ziglar
artist: Ryan Lee
Colorist: Kurt Michael Russell
Writer: and world design
Publisher: Shelter Comics
Clayton Lowe is returning to his small Southern hometown. His new friends from the institute are about to meet up with old friends from high school and discover that something has finally changed in the town that has never changed: Pine Bay is ground zero for an alien bug infestation. It’s time to bury the past.
Why it’s cool: Ryan Lee draws some of the best monsters in comics, and in this new book Gubbershe’s teaming up with writer Cody Ziglar on a small-town Southern horror film. It’s a fantastic combination and the first issue is a great entry into the story and world. Don’t miss this article—it’s the perfect way to start your Halloween comic reading.

Helen of Windhorn #5
writer: Tom King
artist: Bilquis Evely
Colorist: Matthews Lopez
Writer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: dark horse comics
In the penultimate issue, Helen’s frustrations continue to grow as her alcoholism worsens and her longing for an alternate fantasy world continues to haunt the Windhorn family.
Why it’s cool: It’s still an absolutely gorgeous book with a poignant multi-generational family story at its core, and this week’s issue brings what may be the most fantastical monsters and battles yet, starting with a beautiful opening and never ending throughout slack off. I like this book.

Hence #21
Writer/Artist: Wes Craig
Colorist: Jason Wardy
Writer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: Image comics
Kaya and Jin become tomb robbers with the help of a mysterious new ally.
Why it’s cool: so With over 20 issues now out, it’s sometimes easy to take this book for granted. But this is a fun fantasy adventure of the highest order that gives us dynamic action sequences every time. This week’s new issue is pretty much the same, and that’s not a bad thing, with fantastic journeys, introductions to new mercurial characters, interesting fantasy monsters, and more. I’m still amazed at how well this creative team collaborated on this top-notch book.

Revolution 9 #1
writer: Mark London
artist: Carlos Reno
Colorist: Gio Canola
Writer: Dave Sharp
Publisher: Crazy Cave Studio
After years of serving as an Assassin for the Ninth Order, an ancient order dating back nearly 3,000 years, Vividine turned her back on the organization that saved her. Tasked with murdering innocent hacker Jasper Dean, she sets out to save his life and discover the horrific secret that led to his death. With the entire Phoenix Order hunting them, Vividin and Jasper must escape their control and stop them from overturning society as we know it.
Why it’s cool: Revolution 9 #1 Marks the launch of the first comic in Mad Cave Studios’ ambitious new Hell Comics series. Underworld is made up of a collection of stand-alone miniseries that culminate into a major crossover event. If the first issue is any indication, they’ll be interested in their own rituals, too. This is a well-made, concise spy comic with a quick plot that engages readers. This is good stuff and a good start for this new project.

Universal Monster – Frankenstein #2
Writer/Artist: Michael Walsh
Colorist: Tony Marie Griffin
Writer: Becca Kelly
Publisher: Picture Comics – Skybound
“The killer’s brain.” Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant Fritz has a mission – to find materials to create new humans. However, a chance encounter between a policeman and a murderer could derail the best-laid plans…
Why it’s cool: All these new Universal monster comics are doing really well, but Frankenstein is my favorite of these movies, and so is the comic. This book does a great job of filling in the details of the classic film in a fun, intuitive way. I can’t wait for the next issue.
