Tim Burton’s take on Batman in the 1989 film remains a unique take on the caped crusader, mixing gritty realism, gothic horror, and camp undercurrents. All of these elements were enhanced in Burton’s 1992 sequel Batman Returns and featured in the LEGO Batcave Shadow Box – an elaborate model of Batman’s inner sanctum from the film. LEGO is “retiring” this set, which means it will be discontinued, so if you want to buy it, now is the time. Production has most likely been halted and LEGO is simply clearing out remaining inventory.
At $400, the Batcave is the most expensive Batman LEGO set since its launch last year, but it’s also the most elaborate Caped Crusader building kit.
The Batcave Shadow Box is exclusive to LEGO stores and features 3,981 pieces, including seven minifigures: Batman (x2), Bruce Wayne, Alfred, Catwoman, Penguin and Max Shrek, but What’s unique about it is the way it’s presented. The shadow box approach presents the scene in different ways: you can close the box to see the cave through the Batman logo, or open it to create a larger interactive diorama of the Caped Crusader’s secret lair.

There are tons of Easter eggs and references to the movies, making the Batcave itself very interesting and evocative. For example, you can build a complete Batmobile based on the movie, complete with a locker containing Batman’s weapons, the Batsuit vault can be lit up, and you can change the image on the Batcomputer to simulate Bruce Wayne’s search for information about Super Villain information.
If you’d like to see the interactive components in action, you can take a tour of the Batcave below, led by a set designer.
