Since its launch in 2016, every update to Stardew Valley has been free, and Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has no intention of changing that.
Stardew Valley has endured over the past eight years, in part because of its loyal fanbase and massive replayability, but also because ConcernedApe continues to release major updates to the game with tons of new content. Sure, some updates are bigger than others, but they keep players coming back. But best of all, they’re always free – you won’t have to pay a cent for the game beyond the $15 you spent on your first purchase. And, as spotted by GamesRadar, ConcernedApe made it clear on his personal Twitter that he will never charge for DLC or updates, no matter what.

ConcernedApe recently explained that the 1.6 update, which PC players have had access to for some time, is still in the works to port the game to other platforms, including PC and mobile. “I personally work on the mobile port every day,” ConcerenedApe explains. “I will announce when there is any meaningful news.” In response, one fan said that as long as everything the developers do is completely free, people will not complain about waiting, thanks ConcernedApe for Stardew Valley of dedication.

In turn, ConcernedApe responded: “I swear on my family’s honor that I will never charge for DLC or updates as long as I live. If I violate this oath, please screenshot it and shame me.” Here’s a Quite a promise, though considering the free content that’s been added to Stardew Valley over the years, it’s a completely believable one, so you can take Barone’s word for it.
Of course, ConcernedApe is also working on another game, Haunted Chocolatier, and while he’s feeling the pressure, he’s trying not to expose himself too much.
