This contemporary YA book is perfect for fans of Pumpkin head. This is a body-positive story about a girl named Tabitha who gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a character actor at a local amusement park, dedicated to the fantasy world of her favorite author. Unfortunately, expectations and reality often don’t match up, and Tabitha discovers that life in costume isn’t quite what it seems.

Meyer is one of the most well-known figures in the teen field, best known for her writing Lunar Chronicles, It’s a sci-fi retelling of the classic fairy tale. The first book, lunar calendara New York Times bestseller. She has also written prequels and short stories as well as other series including traitor trilogy and gold plated Dualism. In all the books she wrote, we can do magic It’s her favorite.
“I thought a lot about ‘Teen Marissa’ when I was writing the script. Growing up, I was a total romantic and believed in true love and a happy life, even though a lot of the media told me that – as a plus-size Big girl — I don’t deserve these things myself,” she said. “so [We Could Be Magic] There’s a huge focus on body positivity and courage and chasing your dreams. Add to that my love of fairy tales, cosplay, and theme parks, and…yeah, this is definitely a book that’s close to my heart.
When searching for an artist who could visually breathe life into the character, Meyer was looking for someone “who could capitalize on the whimsy of the park while making the character feel real and relatable.” Meyer and her team worked with Murray won big together.
we can do magic Definitely a first-of-its-kind book. Along with Meyer, this is Murray’s first graphic novel. It was a learning experience, Murray said, but she “had a lot of fun bringing Marissa’s story to life.”
The artist has a more personal connection with Meyer, as she is a fan and several of the writer’s books “have helped me through some difficult moments in my life.”
“I was honored to be chosen for this project. Marissa had a creative vision, but she also allowed me to explore my vision and was very supportive of any ideas I had,” she said. “The process was very interesting and a real challenge for me as an artist.”
After working on the project for the past few years, Murray was a little torn when he finally saw it come together. “It’s almost painful for me to have done this because it feels like saying goodbye,” she said. “I hope readers enjoy the characters, the world, and Marissa’s story as much as I do.”
Meyer spoke highly of Murray. “Joelle’s stunning illustrations exceeded all my expectations – the expressions and body language, the color palette, the costumes! Every time I receive the next phase of illustrations, I feel like I’m seeing real people on the page. Magic, I fell even more in love with Tabi and her story,” she said. “I’m really excited about this book being written and can’t wait for readers to see it.”
