Babylon 5: The Complete Series is over 50% off during Amazon Prime Big Deal Day. The Blu-ray set released last year commemorated the 30th anniversary of the series. Babylon 5: The Complete Collection will cost $135 at launch, but you can add the set to your personal collection for just $66.49. The deal is expected to expire at the end of the big trading day tonight, October 9, at 11:59 PM PT.
This Blu-ray collection features all 110 episodes of the series, as well as the 1993 feature-length pilot, Babylon 5: The Party. If you want to complete the collection, you can also buy last year’s CG animated film Babylon 5: The Road Home on Amazon for $18.
What makes this version of Babylon 5 stand out compared to others over the years is that it’s the first time the show has been remastered in high definition, giving fans a clearer look at J. Michael Straczynski’s groundbreaking show. Babylon 5 was released during the golden age of science fiction in the 1990s, and its use of CG technology to create space stations and interstellar dogfights dwarfed Star Wars, as its competitors still relied heavily on practical effects and models.
Of course, these special effects may seem dated now, but at the time, such CG effects were nothing short of miraculous. “Babylon 5” also differs from its competitors in that the show’s five seasons are planned in advance. Straczynski, a TV veteran, had a long-range plan for the show, a style of TV writing that would only become more commonplace decades later.
If you’ve never seen it, Babylon 5 is set on the titular space station and follows a melting pot of human and alien cultures fighting for interstellar peace. Of course, the forces of evil would rather see war engulf the galaxy, with each season focusing on the growing threat to stability across the universe.
