Buying a new laptop is almost certainly a splurge, but keeping an eye out for deals can make it easier to upgrade. The good news is, whether you’re looking for a daily work tool, a cheap Chromebook for homework, or a 2-in-1 Windows PC for the office, you can find options at a variety of price points through Best Buy, Amazon, and more. A powerful premium gaming laptop.

Back-to-school season is prime time for laptop sales, with retailers slashing prices to attract students (and their parents and teachers) getting ready for the fall semester. We expect discounts from technology retailers and OEMs to be higher than usual through early September.

why we like it

This entry-level Dell laptop comes with a 12th generation (2022) Intel Core i3 CPU, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage, and a 15.6-inch non-touch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s nothing spectacular and a bit dated, but that’s a spec sheet we rarely see at this price point. (Hell, even some of the better laptops don’t have 120Hz refresh rates – including the M3 Apple MacBook Air!)

During Dell’s back-to-school sale, it’s down to $299.99, a 21% discount and $30 cheaper than the 256GB model at the time of this writing.

The HP Chromebook Plus x360 14c is a 14-inch ChromeOS convertible that supports Gemini AI features such as “Write for me”, generate wallpapers, and Magic Editor for Google Photos. When Mashable technical editor Kim Gedeon tried it out earlier this year, she wasn’t impressed by its dim display and noisy, low-resolution webcam, but “its solid aluminum chassis, flexible stance. such as tablet and tent modes), extensive ports, and extremely good Keyboards can fascinate you,” she said. (It ended with a 4/5 rating.)

During the back-to-school sale, a configuration with a 12th-generation Intel Core i3 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of SSD storage is marked down to just $499.99 on HP’s website. That’s a 37% savings and $10 shy of the lowest price we’ve ever seen.

The Mashable Choice-winning Copilot+ PC is one of the best Windows laptops we’ve tested all year. It’s a “serious MacBook competitor,” faster and more durable than Apple’s 15-inch M3 Air, Gedeon express.

The Meteor Silver model with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite CPU, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of storage has dropped to a new record low of $899.99 at Best Buy. (It normally sells for $1,199.99 there.) For comparison’s sake, the last time we checked, the same configuration was selling for $949.99 on HP’s website.

Apple’s latest MacBook Air takes the great design of its predecessor and upgrades it with a faster processor, support for WiFi 6E and the ability to drive two external displays when the lid is closed. It’s by far most people’s favorite MacBook and another Mashable Choice winner.

The base 15-inch model (which has two more speakers than the 13-inch version) normally retails for $1,299, but if you buy it from Amazon or Best Buy, you’ll pay $1,099. That’s 15% off Amazon’s all-time Prime Day low price, which is $50.
