The best comics to buy this week, October 16, were released on the eve of New York Comic Con, one of the two major comics industry events in North America. There’s going to be a lot of news coming out of the show, but if you just want to stay home and actually read comics, you have a lot of great options to do that this week. Check out my five suggestions below along with The Beat’s go-to list…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on October 16, 2024
Batman & Robin: Year One #1
Co-organizer: Mark Waid and Chris Sumney
writer: Mark Wade
artist: Chris Samney
Colorist: Matthews Lopez
Engraver: Clayton Cowles/Chris Sumney
Publisher: DC Comics
As Bruce Wayne adjusts to the reality of adopting orphan Dick Grayson, a mysterious new crime boss named The General arrives in Gotham to take over the city by disrupting and destroying other mobsters. But what does he have to do with Two-Face? Batman and his new sidekick Robin are seeking answers, but they’ll need to do whatever it takes to navigate the dynamic duo’s relationship as father and son, with Dick Grayson’s present and future hanging in the balance!
Why it’s cool: In a nutshell, this is Waid and Samnee’s new comic, and their collaboration is not to be missed as it features some of the best superhero comics of the last 20 years, including the greatest superhero comics of all time Daredevil Running etc. This is an easy choice for the best comics to buy on October 16th.

Right hand #5

Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Writer: Ross Wootton
Publisher: Image Comics/Skybound
Destro. Cobra Commander. Crimson twins. The most dangerous forces in the energy universe are at war… but only one can win. The road to G.I. Joe #1 ends here!
Why it’s cool: This final issue marks the end of a long and interesting road to a new energy universe Special Forces #1 (Reservations are still available until next Monday!). These intertwined books do a great job of creating a new status quo for these old characters. It’s been a great journey.
price: $3.99
Ultimate Spider-Man #10
writer: Jonathan Hickman
artist: David Messina
Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Writer: Corey Pettit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Fan-favorite duo Ben Parker and J. Jonah Jameson take center stage in this mystery investigation! But in a world of shadows and secrets, every stone uncovered brings danger… and they will soon have to decide which is the greater challenge – uncovering the secrets or keeping them!
Why it’s cool: It’s great to have a really good new Spider-Man comic. This is certainly a reimagining of some of Spider-Man’s core tenants in new ways. I think it’s safe to say that this is the best new Spider-Man comic in a long time, 10 issues in total.
price: $4.99
Super Giant #6
Writer/Artist: James Harlan
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Writer: Ross Wootton
Publisher: Image comics
Outside the universe, a terrifying new enemy has appeared! Has any Ultramega ever faced such a threat? But first, Noah will attack the city of crazy monsters with his giant fist!
Why it’s cool: It’s a story about space monsters and their home planet and what they’re doing to Earth, and if all that isn’t enough, it looks different than any other new comic today. This is a must read and settle in because I have a feeling every issue will end up in this space.
price: $7.99
Where the Monsters Are – Cull-De-Sac #1
writer: Kyle Starks
artist: Peter Kowalski
Colorist: Vladimir Popov
Writer: Joshua Reed
Publisher: dark horse comics
The hit meta-horror comedy from Eisner-nominated writer Kyle Starks returns just in time for Halloween! Friends, come and join us, it’s time to visit another killer’s gated community and meet new scary monsters as we return to the world where the monsters live. Connor Hayes, the final girl turned top monster hunter, is taken to Site B and expected to be a good little killer, but will he cooperate? What bone-tingling secrets are hidden in this new horror village?
Why it’s cool: I love humorous deconstructions of genre comics, and this book (now in its second volume) is definitely that. Get ready, all the jokes and horror tropes (and jokes about horror tropes) are back this second where the monster is Small.
