This week’s November 27th Best Comics to Buy is a little strange, with some of this week’s scheduled output facing delays from publishers. That said, the upcoming books appear to be very strong. Below you can find my five suggestions, along with the usual weekly list…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on November 27th
Barb #4
writer: Garth Ennis
artist: Jason Burrows
Colorist: Andy Troy
Writer: Rob Steen
Publisher: Oops Comics
More shocking swordplay comes from the fiery team of Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows (Get Fury, Crossed)! In order to rescue her friend Izzy, Bubbles boards a ship full of self-righteous, precious, affected elves, whose presence infuriates her and whose captain has undisclosed plans for her!
Why it’s cool: The funniest books in comics remain the funniest books in comics this week. This series is such an outrageous fantasy satire. I absolutely loved it and found myself giggling the whole time.
price: $3.99
Black Canary: Best of the Best #1
writer: Tom King
artist: Ryan Sook
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Writer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
Black Canary takes on Lady Shiva to determine who is the greatest hand-to-hand fighter in the universe! Who will walk away with the title? Screenwriters Tom King (Wonder Woman, Supergirl: Tomorrow) and Ryan Suk (Legion of Super-Heroes) will compete over six rounds to see if our heroes have what it takes to become the best of the best.
Why it’s cool: This comic is a slap in the face. When you accept it, you will ask for more. It’s very well constructed and the artwork is outstanding. I was completely mesmerized from page to page. There is nothing superfluous about this moment. Just a perfect first issue. I always forget that any new Ryan Sook art is an event…until I get new Ryan Sook art. Really, this is just an amazing book from start to finish.
price: $4.99
Justice League Unlimited #1
writer: Mark Wade
artist: Dan Mora
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
Writer: Ariana Maher
Publisher: DC Comics
The Justice League is back and bigger than ever! Following the events of “Power” and “DC All In Special,” Darkseid’s death creates a massive power vacuum in the DCU, and Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman must join forces like never before to expand the Justice League’s Scale to encompass the good deeds of each hero who defends the forces of good in the face of incredible evil! As our heroes work to uncover the mystery of the Dark Lord’s successor, Ray Palmer’s atomic plan sparks a race between heroes and villains to control the fate of Earth’s superhuman abilities, which could make it possible Destroy everything the Alliance has built. The world will be born, the world will be destroyed, and there are surprises waiting on the last page… Don’t miss the dawn of a new era of justice – everything starts from here!
Why it’s cool: It’s the primary book that reveals the new status quo of the DC Universe, which includes a revived Space Watchtower and basically every superhero on Earth joining the Justice League. This is an interesting new status quo. The first issue itself is also a satisfying single issue, looking at it from the perspective of a hero you don’t often see. Best of all, the artistic duo of Dan Mora-Tamra Bonvillain remains undefeated.
price: $3.99
Snakes in the Garden: Ed Gray and England’s Last Stand #1
writer: Mike Mignola
artist: Ben Steinbeck
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Writer: Clem Robbins
Publisher: dark horse comics
Witch hunter Ed Gray is summoned by Alice, Queen of the last kingdom on Earth, to defend her and England in a final confrontation against Morgan le Fay and her champions. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and fan-favorite artist Ben Stenbeck have teamed up to create the final post-apocalyptic story.
Why it’s cool: In Hellraiser’s main narrative, the world has ended, but that doesn’t stop the comic from exploring what that means. Edward Gray’s new miniseries does just that, traveling through time and space to tell a weighty and epic story inspired by one of the comic book universe’s greatest myths.
price: $3.99
Ninja Turtles #4
writer: Jason Aaron
artist: Chris Burnham
Colorist: Brian Leiber
Writer: Sean Lee
Publisher: IDW Press
Chris Burnham returns to art duties in this issue, and we finally learn Donatello’s fate! Trapped in a mutant zoo and forced to fight thrill-seeking rich men, he’s still mentally broken since we last saw him. As mysterious forces converge on him, can Downey muster the strength to defeat these enemies and gain freedom?
Why it’s cool: Donatello is (objectively) one of the best Turtles, and Chris Burnham is one of the best artists in comics. Combine them and you get my favorite single issue of this new era ninja turtles comics.
