Next time we take a deep dive into retro gaming on Switch, we’ll be going all the way back to 1989. . While there’s a huge selection of games from these handheld devices in the Nintendo Switch Online app, we’re focusing on the ones that dare to exist in the Switch eShop. We’ve got ten of our favorite games here, plus five we’d like to see. Of course, in no particular order. It’s time to play it loud!
Santa($9.99)
Once a true scarcity cost hundreds of dollars to obtain in any legal capacity, Santa Now easily available in digital form. The game is a lot rougher than its sequel, but it pushes the boundaries of the Game Boy Color hardware in a number of interesting ways, giving platformers a lot more to offer than your average Game Boy jump-starter. Wow, I haven’t seen the word “hop-and-bop” in twenty-five years. Santa: It’s quite fun.
Travel World DX ($19.99)
This is another game that wasn’t officially playable until recently and costs quite a bit of money. Travel the world is a fun platformer from Sunsoft that offers a short and sweet experience. This version of the game has been fully colorized and includes a lot of extra content worth delving into. It’s a great way to play out this bizarre and fascinating story.
Final Fantasy Legend II – SaGa Final Fantasy Legend Collection ($19.99)
It’s time to dive into the compilation, and we’ll start with all the Game Boy games: SaGa Collection. You’ll get all three games final fantasy legend series here, and they’re all very good handheld RPGs. I’m picking Final Fantasy Legend II Highlighted here simply because I think it’s the best of the three. It has a lot of weird mechanics saga The game is fun, but feels more comprehensive and approachable than the first game. Possibly the best turn-based RPG on the systemPokémon.
Final Fantasy Adventure – Mana Collection ($39.99)
Go hand in hand final fantasy legend game, final fantasy adventure is the beginning of this long running game Mana series. Therefore, you will Mana collection and two Super NES follow-ups. Again, all games are worth playing. This action RPG offers a great alternative Link’s Awakening Systemically, the pacing is fast and the storytelling ambitious. Although it has been remade several times, nothing is as good as the original.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Rescue – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Series ($39.99)
Konami makes some great Game Boy games and offers some of them through its various series. Cowabanga Collection Own all three original Game Boy TMNT Games included, I think they all have their merits. Open-ended, pseudo-Metroidvania Ninja Turtles III: Total Rescue Still, this is the best option of the bunch. There’s plenty of action, as you’d expect, but the extra layers of exploring the world, saving your brothers, and finding all the upgrades make it something you can really sink your teeth into.
C-Ops – Contra Anniversary Series ($19.99)
After a somewhat tepid attempt Castlevania to Game Boy via Castlevania: Adventureit’s understandable if someone thinks a hectic run-and-gun operation has little hope. Contra Will survive the transition. surprisingly, Operation C It turned out to be really great. Of course, you can’t play with other players. Strictly speaking, it’s one person’s business. But it’s fast, fun and challenging, just as you’d hope Contra The game wants. Maybe there is hope for Konami’s action platformer on handheld computers!
Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge – Castlevania Anniversary Collection ($19.99)
What does it mean to be a sign? Yes, after playing the first Game Boy Castlevania In the game, Konami completely turned things around with Belmont’s Revenge. this is an excellent Castlevania game, a game that easily hangs with the home console entries, even if it doesn’t quite surpass them. Given that it’s sandwiched by some less-than-stellar games, many players may skip this game thinking it’ll be the same. If you haven’t played it yet, here’s a handy method.
Ninja Pictures: The Great World Adventure – Ninja Pictures: Vintage Collection ($14.99)
Ninja Kagamaru: The Great World Adventure It’s not the best game in the series by any means, but I think it’s a great example of some of the more offbeat games that populate the libraries of games from big publishers. Some proper work has been done on this reissue too. It’s newly localized and tinted, bringing a nice shine to a game that probably won’t be at the top of anyone’s bucket list. although great world adventure is the only Game Boy game in the series, and overall, the series is a fun game.
Extreme Sports ($9.99)
WayForward’s most famous completely original property on the Game Boy Color is obviously Santabut extreme sports No less impressive. Essentially a series of sports mini-games tied into an open world, extreme sports Much better than it has any right to be. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is great for picking up and playing, and those looking to complete everything will find a serious challenge ahead of them.
Princess Blobet to the Rescue – The Boy and His Blobby Vintage Collection ($9.99)
Another game here more for its unique feel than anything else, Rescue Princess Blobet It perfectly brings the original NES family computer-style puzzle adventure game to the small screen. In some ways, it’s a more polished game than its predecessor, delivered in a tighter, better-paced format. If you like games that require some thinking due to occasional opacity, you’ll love this game.
Plus… 5 Game Boy and Game Boy Color games we’d like to see on Switch
Batman: The Video Game
Yes, it’s a little weird that Batman uses a gun throughout this early Game Boy action game. But it’s also weird that Keaton’s Batman gleefully murders bad guys, so let’s just call it a sign of the times. Importantly, this is another really great Sunsoft batman games, although I know the odds of these games based on movies batman There are almost zero games that come back and I will never stop asking.
Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
I generally avoid games that I think might come to Nintendo Switch Online at some point, which means most first-party Nintendo stuff is out of date. I really hope I’m wrong about this, but something tells me though Pokémon Spin-off games may continue to appear on the subscription service, but the mainline games will not. So I’m officially requesting the ability to purchase and play these beautiful Game Boy RPGs on my Switch.
Gladys: Star Assault
I’m torn between including this or being excellent R type DXbut in the end we have R type size on changes to tickling, and Gladys: Star Assault Only available in Game Boy form. For a platform whose display was supposed to be terrible for shooters, the Game Boy had a lot of great games. This is Konami’s second stab at the Gradius can on the platform, and while the first was fine, this one really kicks things off. Honestly, I just want one gradient A series adhering to the Konami style Contra, Castlevaniaand TMNT Those ones. If that happens, this game should be there.
metal gear
What I’ve come to realize is that there’s a lot of Konami in this article. Regardless, this is arguably the best third-party Game Boy Color exclusive. Pretty much everything that’s great about PlayStation metal gear Somehow squeezed into this completely original adventure. Because of this level of fidelity, the game completely blew me away at the time and still impresses me today. Yes, most templates are made in MSX2 metal gear 2, But it would be cool to see something like this on the Game Boy Color. Maybe this will come up next metal gear collect?
dragon warrior monster
Pokémon spawned many imitators, but to be fair Dragon Quest Previously, the mainline games had elements of catching monsters. Pokémon arrived. So, you know. We forgive you, King. dragon warrior monster is one of the better Game Boy games, inspired by Pokémon’s success, I think it would be great to see it on Switch. Did you know? it yes Available on Switch, but only in Japan. Come on, Square Enix. Just putting Western ROM in the package will help some people Dragon Quest Fans are out!
