Adele has two main concerns this winter vacation: catching up on her favorite comic series and dealing with acne. But one snowy morning, when her sister Helen agrees to let her follow her work route so she can get to the library, Adele hears and sees several ghosts. To Helen’s surprise, she was excited when she revealed what had happened: Adele had a family gift!
While Helen and their mother couldn’t communicate with spirits, their grandma could, and so could her mother and grandmother. But Gran found her middling abilities so troublesome that she painted her home electric blue. Ghosts hate this color, so they never appear. Helen wants Adele to make her own decision about her gift, but first, Adele must endure a menstrual party – since, of course, her medium powers manifested during her first period. (That possible Explain acne.
Adele and Helen’s mother is currently studying abroad, and Glen is strongly anti-ghost, so Adele has no one to directly ask her about her powers. She goes to the library in search of information, where she befriends a teenage ghost named Ambroise. He can interact well with physical objects, write code, do some “light hacking,” and even use social media (he has 50,000 followers). Adele is surprised to find that ghosts can interact with the physical world in this way, but the more ghosts she encounters, the less surprised she is by their abilities.
When she is approached by Jules, an elderly ghost who fears that his grandson will destroy the neighborhood if he sells his house to corrupt developers, Adele does her best to help. But her grandmother’s area of expertise was fighting community injustice, not Adele’s. It was a difficult request, not because she didn’t want to help, but because she didn’t know how.
Then she learns that a group of powerful ancient ghosts have taken matters into their own hands, adding another layer of risk when Glen’s community group is accused of causing damage.
writer/artist Sophie Escabas is a talented all-ages paranormal storyteller in that she leans into the creepy but never lets her books become full-blown horror. very similar brooklyn witch series, taxi ghost (Shout out to those witches!) Very charming. This makes the grotesque parts less scary, but still tense. Like any good sci-fi/fantasy story, this book has a clear point of view and provides solid commentary on the issues of gentrification and homelessness.
taxi ghost Offers an interesting and unique look at how ghosts operate, what they want, and how mediums interact with them on any given day. Escabas once again demonstrates her talent for crafting unique and delightful ghost stories, and her dialogue gets better with each book. taxi ghost This book is a quick read that can easily be read in one session, but there are separate chapters for readers who need a break. Simple panel layouts, tight dialogue, and focused character facial expressions keep things engaging, especially as each person’s complexities gradually reveal themselves.
kiwi byrd’s The color work is also excellent. Each ghost has its own translucent hue, and the clarity of both the background and the snow is rendered beautifully. Everything feels a bit gloomy and washed out, as is the case in real life in the winter, which adds greatly to the overall mood of the story – but there’s still joy to be found in brightly colored socks, patterned sweaters, and more.
I love so much taxi ghost Quite a bit, I think this would be a good read for anyone who wants something seasonal rather than scary. if you love it And thinking you (or someone you love) might re-read it, buy it, but for my part I think it’s only right to take a page from Adele’s page: get it from the library to support their Work and your community, and save a little cash from your wallet!
Final verdict: borrow
