We still know very little about the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but the voice behind Toad at least promises there will be some “deep cuts.”
A sequel to the Super Mario Bros. movie has been in the works for a while, but it might be a long time before we actually see anything. But Keegan-Michael Key, the actor who plays everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic mushroom Toad, did share some tidbits in a recent interview with Men’s Journal. “One thing I can say about the second movie is that it’s a little wider in scope, and it takes place in a very interesting lore and Mario world,” Key said. “They’re going to find some really cool Easter eggs, which is pretty exciting so far.”

Anyone who saw the first movie has probably already counted all the Easter eggs it’s filled with, and I’m sure the news that there will be more in the sequel will be welcomed by the same crowd. Key continued to talk vaguely about the film, saying, “I feel like the creative work they’ve done has really broadened the universe that these characters live in, and we’re going to meet some new people. We’re going to meet some new people, and they’re all old Like people, and some that I think are really deep, but because of the way the story is going right now, those characters are going to be really interesting.
This obviously raises the question: who are those deep cuts – Prince Haru from an ’80s Mario anime? Mushbot from Mario Party Advance? Or, hopefully we get Stanley the Bugger, everyone’s favorite character from Donkey Kong 3. , start a petition now).
