The 80s classic film The Karate Kid is developing a pixel art fighting game for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Expected to be released on September 20th.

Following the storyline of the movie, you can play as Daniel Russo, Mr. Miyagi, Kumiko or Ali Mills and participate in 12 levels for 1-4 players.

“Relive the adventures of The Karate Kid while facing the challenges posed by Cobra Kai and other foes. The game follows the narrative of the original trilogy, allowing you to experience the highs and lows of The Karate Kid’s journey. Read the official press release.

“Master the art of Karate with an intuitive and responsive combat system. Execute powerful combos, execute signature moves like the Crane Kick, and defend yourself from the enemy dojo’s relentless onslaught. Each level brings new challenges and enemies inspired by From the film’s unforgettable characters.

Judging from the trailer, it looks pretty good. If it’s even half as good as some of the more recent beat ’em ups, like the excellent Streets of Rage 4 or the fantastic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, it’ll be well worth playing.

Unfortunately, the game’s developers didn’t give people much hope. Street Rumble is produced by GameMill Entertainment, whose reputation is…well, to put it mildly, a bit pantsy. They released gems like the truly terrifying Skull Island: The Rise of Kong. To be fair, Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Legend Continues, their beat-’em-up action game published in 2020, did pretty well, scoring a mediocre 67 on Opencritic. I also reviewed their Nickleodeon All-Star Brawl 2, which was pretty fun, so maybe it’s worth being cautiously optimistic.

Some are on, some are off.
