Ubisoft will launch a new version of its turn-based strategy game champion tactics on Steam on Monday, May 19. Titled “Champion Tactics: Refored”, the game is a free playback version that does not include any blockchain features or NFT integrations.
The Steam distribution marks an early version of the game that relies on Web3 Technologies. Ubisoft has confirmed this version is targeted at players who do not have ownership of digital assets or have traditional experiences of blockchain-based mechanics.
The game’s arrival is also the arrival of steam, and it also coincides with the transition from Season 3 to Season 4, which starts on the same day. Ubisoft said some changes will be introduced as part of this update, but no full details have been released.

What expectations can we get from Steam launches?
Champion Strategy: Reconstructed is a squad-based turn game where players choose three characters called “Champions”, each with different attributes and abilities, with the aim of competing with other players in a structured game.
Unlike the game’s Grimoria Chronicles version, which contains NFTS and blockchain-based assets, Steam Edition will not support any Web3 features. Players will not be able to import NFT champions or interact with on-chain economies. Instead, the redesign focuses on a fully Web2 experience, allowing for unlocking and crafting champions using projects in games called “Bloodstone.”
Although the game is listed as free to play, the Steam Store confirms that it will include in-app purchases. Ubisoft describes this experience as a “tactical victory,” which suggests that skills and decisions should determine the outcome of the game, not the size of the wallet.
Players will need to connect their Steam account to Ubisoft Connect to play, a requirement that may prove a split between PC users who like to log in to the platform. On the positive side, the Steam version will support Valve’s standard features including achievement, transaction cards and easy anti-verbal (EAC) protection.

More information about champion tactics
The original blockchain version of the championship strategy was launched in October 2024 and was part of Ubisoft’s early entry into Web3 games, and comes with its own NFT marketplace and avatar integration in the sandbox. After redesigning, Ubisoft is clearly taking a more traditional route, offering an experience that tends to tactical gameplay rather than token economies for standalone experiences.
Whether the Steam version will find a foothold in the competitive landscape of free games remains to be seen, but its emphasis on accessibility and skill-based advancement can prove attractive to strategy enthusiasts.
Champion Strategy: The rebuilt wishlist is now available for Steam and will be officially launched on May 19.
