Later this year, Skeletor Crew will introduce several new characters to the Star Wars universe, including Jude Law’s Force-wielding Jordyn Nawood and Jaleel White’s droid pirate Gaunt. While the show focuses on four kids lost in space, there will be plenty of pirates in “Skeleton Crew.” That’s fitting, since one of the inspirations behind the series was a classic LucasArts video game that also featured pirates.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Skeleton Crew” co-creator Jon Watts confirmed that his love of the “Monkey Island” video game series influenced his view of the pirates in “Skeleton Crew.” “I’m also a huge fan of Monkey Island,” Watts said. “It’s also classic Lucas. So somewhere in between Star war Pirates and Monkey Island Pirates. I think we found the sweet spot.
The Monkey Island game launched in 1990 and was recently revived with Return to Monkey Island under the supervision of founder Ron Gilbert. The tone of these games also seems to have inspired the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
The cast of “Skull Crew” includes Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Wim, Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Fern, Kiriana Kratt as KB, Robert Timothy Smith Starring as Neal, Nick Frost as SM 33, Frank Tatasciore as Brutus, and Kerry Condon in a currently undisclosed role.
“Skeleton Crew” will premiere on Disney+ on December 3.
