although Pikachu ex may be making all the headlines and attracted wider attention, Pokémon card gameMultiple cards in the Surging Sparks set are seeing significant resale price increases that the game hasn’t seen in years. Even though the madness of the first week is starting to calm down, it’s still a surprisingly expensive series.
Cards hold their value well into the second week, when typically we would see them collapse, but I still strongly suspect we’ll see some of these prices drop by the end of November.
However, I think what we see in Surging Sparks is another Pokémon card gameOccasionally it reaches its peak, the moment when it once again captures the zeitgeist and everyone joins in for some speculation. This may be driven in part by anticipation for January’s new set, Prism Evolution – which has already sold out of early pre-orders due to its focus on Eevee solutions. Everyone always goes crazy about these, and it’s possible to see prices that make Surging Sparks look like nothing.
I’ve opened about 60 packages of Surging Sparks (thanks in part to The Pokémon Company, they sent my city A whole lot) and no luck at all. The pull rate seems to be the norm for 2023-24 and is a disappointing five out of five for the standard predecessor or better, if you want to see a surprising amount of gorgeous artwork in the series then The pull rate is much lower.
It’s gotten to the point where it feels silly to have an artist create so much beautiful work and then make it difficult for anyone to see any of it. Given that Pokémon doesn’t see any profit from resellers, the financial incentive is simply to get people to buy more packs to try and find them. But that’s not a great long-term strategy, given that everyone is used to terrible odds. Cruelly, I managed to get three Horrible all-art Bruxish card (the art is great, the Pokémon is ugly), and completely missed any of the 35 different cards I was hoping to draw. However, the all-art Castform is cute and I’m glad I have it.
However, you may be much luckier. Typically when we put these articles together, one card is teetering around a hundred bucks, and then five or six cards are down to the teens. But this is not the case in “Surge of Sparks”.
