Sony appears to be testing written user reviews on PS Store – WGB

Are you wondering what Dave from halfway around the world thinks of Helldiver 2? Well, now you know exactly how he feels about the latest weapon nerfs! Sony appears to be venturing into the world of written user reviews, with plans to bring them to the PlayStation Store.

This was originally brought to my attention by cusman78 on Reddit, who received an email invitation from Sony asking if they would write a user review for Helldiver 2. There is also an option to mark comments as containing spoilers.

Other users also echoed support for cusman78’s statement. A user named chalky_83 stated that they received an email asking them to review Final Fantasy 7 Reborn, but they were unable to do so because they own the disc version of the game rather than the digital version. Darkblade887 replied that they are in the same boat as Resident Evil 4.

It seems only people who own the digital game can leave reviews. This is presumably so that only people who actually own the game can review it, unlike Metacritic where people can review games and movies they’ve never played or seen.

People also appear to be reporting that they can see comments written by others when they visit the page through an email invitation. However, reviews usually don’t appear when entering the store page.

It’s unclear what method Sony used to select participants. It can be random or based on factors like time played or trophies collected. What seems clear is that this is some form of limited testing, but Sony is clearly not worried about the news getting out as there doesn’t appear to be any form of non-disclosure agreement.

Personally, I think this could be a great addition to the store. Sony has been allowing star ratings for some time now, so this is the logical next step. User reviews are very useful on the Steam store, although they also have some major drawbacks, such as people leaving negative or positive reviews about things that have nothing to do with the game.

What do you think? Are user reviews helpful, or do you find that you end up having to dig through a lot of crap to find something useful?
