In the new series Small Town Murders, an overworked detective escapes to a small coastal town in hopes of getting some respite. However, his wish did not come true because every town has secrets and murders continue to occur along the coastline.
Rossif Sutherland stars as Karl Alberg in the TV series based on LR Wright’s nine-book series.
The series adds an all-star cast and the following characters.
Carl Ahlberg (played by Rossif Sutherland)
Carl Ahlberg is the main character. Tired of working in the big city, he fled to the small coastal town of Gibsons.
However, Carl soon realizes that the town has its own dark secrets, and he must use his world-class detective skills to solve the murders that keep appearing across his shores.
Things get more complicated when Carl meets Cassandra (Kristen Kreuk), who challenges and intrigues him.
Rossif Sutherland is the son of the late Donald Sutherland and the half-brother of Kiefer Sutherland.
Sutherland began his television career with a recurring role on ER. He later went on to star in other series such as the Canadian series The King and The CW’s Reign.
Sutherland married his King’s Landing co-star Selina Hinden in February 2016, with whom he has a son.
He has recently appeared in several films, including “Orphan: First Kill.”
In May 2024, he will star in the thriller “Guardians” with Tatiana Maslany. In the film, a couple celebrates their anniversary in a secluded cabin, where a sinister secret is revealed to the wife.
Cassandra Mitchell (played by Kristen Kreuk)
Cassandra Mitchell is the local librarian. She was also the muse and lover of Carl Ahlberg (Sutherland).
She challenges him and helps him solve the murder. While there isn’t much information about her character yet, they wouldn’t be choosing someone like Crook to be the librarian and muse. She is an important part of the story.
It reminds me of when they cast Emily VanCamp as Nurse Nevin in The Resident, but there was very little information about her casting.
We’ll have to wait until the show premieres to learn more about Cassandra and her relationship with Carl.
Kristin Kruek first appeared in the Canadian teen drama series Edgemont from 2000 to 2004, where she first teamed up with Ian Weir, and in Small Town Murder Reunited with Ian Weir in “The Case”.
Crook then moved to The CW, starring in “Smallville,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Burden of Truth.” Burden of Truth first aired on CBC, with Crook producing the series.
Since starring on the show, Crook seems to have a strong career in Canadian legal or thriller series, and we’re excited to see what she’ll bring to the show.
George Wilcox (played by James Cromwell)
Recently, George Wilcox suffered a devastating loss when his wife of nearly 50 years, Myra, passed away.
He tried to cope with his grief by working in the garden and visiting Cassandra in the library.
George also meets his 80-year-old acquaintance Carlisle Burke, whose shared grief stretches back decades and erupts in surprising violence.
James Cromwell began his career by starring in many classic television shows, such as All in the Family, Barney Miller, and Little House on the Prairie.
Cromwell starred in several critically acclaimed films, such as “Baby” and “The Green Mile,” which earned him Academy Award and Actor Award nominations.
Most recently, he has starred in several HBO and MAX series, including The Young Pope, The Succession and Julia, in which he played Julia Child’s father.
Cromwell has long been an animal rights activist. He became a vegetarian while playing Farmer Hoggart in the 1995 film Baby.
Zoe Strachan (Stana Katic)
Zoe Strachan is a beautiful 40-year-old woman who lives outside the city and likes to keep to herself.
She has a cool look; if the wrong button is pressed, she can explode into a rage.
In 2008, Stana Katic began playing Kate Beckett in ABC’s “Castle.”
The role earned her many accolades and she quickly became a fan favorite.
Kartik starred in and produced the thriller Absentia, which aired on Prime Video from 2017 to 2020.
She plays FBI agent Emily Byrne, who disappears and is found six years later with no memory that her husband has remarried and started a new life.
With her wealth of experience, we knew she would bring an emotional level to Zoe.
Kartik is a passionate activist focused on children’s education and global organizing.
Corporal (Edwina Yen) Corporal (Mia Lowe)
Staff Sergeant Edwina Yen recently moved to the coast and, at the age of 30, earned a degree in criminology.
She is smart and speaks three languages. She saw this opportunity to move up the career ladder.
Mya Lowe has always had a passion for art. She began her career as a hip-hop dancer in Victoria, British Columbia, where she competed for many years.
It wasn’t until after high school that Lowe discovered his love for acting.
She most recently played Gen in Yellowjacket and Kiley in My Life with Walt Boy.
Edwina Yen sounds very similar to Kiley in that they are both witty and reliable. This will be Law’s first adult role since taking on teen roles.
Isabella Hubbard (Savona Spracklin)
Isabella Hubbard is a witty civilian receptionist.
She is a very proud Native American who struggles to balance her deep-seated beliefs with working for the police force.
Savonna Sprackin is a member of the Nisga Nation and likes to honor her roots in her projects.
She most recently starred as Casey Woodburn in the second season of the Canadian drama series Tribal and Annie Sullivan in the third season of Departure.
Sergeant Sid Sokolowski (played by Aaron Douglas)
Sergeant Sid Sokolowski is Carl Ahlberg’s (Sutherland) second-in-command. He was a hardworking man and a devoted father of five children.
Working with Carl rekindled Sid’s lost spark of life. He’s not the smartest guy out there, but he’s loyal and will jump into a burning building to save your life.
Aaron Douglas has appeared in many science fiction TV series, including “Stargate SG-1”, “Dark Angel”, “Smallville”, “Eureka” and “Flashpoint”. He was nominated for a 2013 Canadian Screen Award for Drama Guest Performance for his performance in Flashpoint.
He is best known for playing Galen Tyrol in Battlestar Galactica. This role established him as an actor.
Douglas reunited with his “Battlestar Galactica” co-star Paul Campbell in the 2011 Syfy film “Killer Mountain.”
Police officer Andy Kendrick (Fritz Craven Destin)
Officer Andy Kendrick strives to be a good cop without being a jerk.
He has good intentions but often messes up.
As a newcomer, he often irritated the rest of the team, but Carl Ahlberg took a liking to him and saw his potential.
Andry Kendrick sounds like an older version of Sean Smith, Frizzy Craven in Superman & Lois The character played by Fritzy-Klevans Destine.
Sean was aggressive and difficult at first, but once he got to know the other students better, he became more friendly.
Hopefully the role will fit him, since Superman & Lois cut its entire recurring cast, including high school teens and football players.
Destiny also appeared in The Boys Season 3 as Young Black Noir.
Small Town Murders will be his first series regular role.
