Sky Mavis, the creator of blockchain-based games Axie Infinity and Ronin Network, has laid off 21% of its staff as part of a strategic adjustment.
The company said the decision had nothing to do with financial constraints but was intended to streamline focus on key projects.
In addition to the layoffs, Sky Mavis also announced plans to release a new Axie Infinity game in early 2025, marking a shift in the company’s priorities.
Workforce reduction and strategic focus
On November 23, Sky Mavis co-founder Nguyen Thanh Trung announced layoffs, calling it a “difficult decision.” The layoffs affect 21% of the company’s employees. Trung emphasized that the layoffs were not motivated by financial concerns but were intended to align the company’s resources with its long-term plans.
Sky Mavis will now prioritize key projects including developing Axie Infinity, Ronin Wallet, Mavis Marketplace and expanding its web3 game publishing efforts.
The statement also referenced the broader regulatory environment, with Trump expressing optimism about recent developments, particularly in the United States after Donald Trump won the presidential election.
Expected changes in regulatory policies may provide more support for blockchain technology and digital assets. Sky Mavis sees these potential regulatory changes as an opportunity to enhance its products and expand its presence in the blockchain gaming industry.
What do we know about the new Axie Infinity game?
The company confirmed that a new Axie Infinity game is in development and is scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2025.
According to Sky Mavis, the upcoming game will incorporate lessons learned from the original Axie Infinity to improve the user experience.
Details about the game’s features or target audience have not been disclosed, but it is expected to be built on the company’s existing blockchain gaming framework.
