I can’t imagine how Silent Hill: Ascension won an Emmy.
We all know Silent Hill: Ascension is a terrible “game,” right? I quoted the game in the air because it’s hard to call it a game, really, when all you have to do is vote on cutscenes. Yet, against all odds, it won an Emmy. Yes, the same Emmys that give out awards to truly great television shows, not to the actual Ascension. The specific award it won was for “Outstanding Innovation in an Emerging Media Programming,” and I don’t know about you, but I don’t think the words “outstanding” or “innovative” belong in the clutter of Silent Hill games.

I’m actually not sure what’s new in Ascension? In fact, people will play “games” collectively and live? Twitch Plays Pokemon did this a decade ago, and its inability to pay for better votes to make the outcome more likely is just a reminder of how confusing Ascension’s monetization system is, without even mentioning its season ticket. Somehow it’s even more confusing that it won an Emmy, because it turns out it wasn’t the only thing that won the award.
Apple Vision Pro Mixed Reality Marvel Game What If…? – “Immersive Storytelling” also won the award, but the fact is that it was also the only piece of media nominated. Yes, out of the two awards that were nominated, both won the award, but that seems to be based on the fact that it was a juried award, meaning that only a handful of people actually voted (probably in this one) because They are all games, so they need someone who really understands the industry).
Still, I wouldn’t be bothered by Ascension, Emmy or not, especially considering the Silent Hill 2 remake is on the way, and our own Kelsey opined in a recent preview that, This work is actually surprisingly good.
