There’s no doubt that many people are most excited about The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom or Mario & Luigi: Brothers, but there’s one announcement that comes to mind first. MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics from Capcom will be released globally this year on Steam, PS4 (PS5 via backward compatibility) and Nintendo Switch, making these games available on modern platforms for the first time . I’ve never played most of these games before, but every recent Capcom series involving fighting games has been great, so this release is pretty exciting. Ahead of release, I had the opportunity to chat with MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Producer Shuhei Matsumoto about fan reaction, a potential Black Collar version of MvC 2, the team working on Steam Deck Verification, and fan reaction , community, and more.
NOTE: The images used are key art of the game from the footage on each unit, not actual early versions of the game.
TouchArcade (TA): MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is undoubtedly the biggest surprise announcement of 2024 so far. Normally there would be some hint of something like this, but we had no idea this was happening. How have the developers at Capcom seen the reaction online?
Matsumoto Shuhei (SM): I’m glad you were in for a big surprise! We feel the announcement approach should vary depending on the title, so we chose that approach for this game. We watched live and were moved by your reactions. We also saw the reaction video afterwards! We are very happy about this.
face: When “Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection” is released, the Japanese version can choose from two versions, while the overseas version can only play the overseas version. Are the cross-region versions of MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics the same on Steam and consoles?
SM: “MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classic” has no regional differences. All players can enjoy the Japanese and international versions!
face: I haven’t played most of the games in this series before, which makes the prospect of having rollback netcode included in an online game that much more exciting. Was it always planned to include rollback network code in this release?
SM: Rollback netcode was used in Capcom Fighting Collection and was well received by users, which is why we decided to use it in the development of MARVEL vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classic.
face: How long did it take the team to develop this package?
SM: The development itself will take about 1 to 2 years, but we have been wanting to realize this project for about 4 years and have been communicating with Marvel during this time.
face: Will Capcom be doing anything to support the competitive scene surrounding MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, which will no doubt start to grow soon with the release of this official release?
SM: The catalyst for making this game was the continued use of our game at community events and tournaments. By releasing the game on current-gen consoles, we hope to once again put the spotlight on the community that has worked tirelessly to keep the scene alive over the years. You are the ones supporting it.
face: The MvC 2 soundtrack is legendary but was never officially released. It will be included in the gallery mode here. Are there any plans for a vinyl release of this and other music from the series?
SM: I want one too! Let’s contact Marvel and see.
face: Has Capcom made any specific enhancements to MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics on Steam Deck? Lately, every Capcom game has been amazing to play on the Steam Deck. I use it to play Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter.
SM: We are optimizing the game to ensure smooth performance on Steam Deck. Although it’s still pending review by Valve, we’re getting ready to get the “green check mark” approval.
I had the opportunity to preview MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics when I sent Capcom interview questions. It still looks great, and I have a feeling it will eventually join the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection as my most played Capcom series to date. The only real peeve I have right now is that we don’t have a release date for MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics yet, nor are we looking at potential limited edition releases in any territories. Hopefully both games will be released soon so I can pre-order it on Switch and PS4.
I’d like to thank Capcom’s Shuhei Matsumoto and Janice Teo for taking the time and facilitating this interview.
You can follow all of our interviews here, including our recent interview with Santa Ragione, Peter ‘Durante’ Thoman’s interview about PH3 and Falcom, where M2 discusses shmups and more, as well as Digital Extremes on Warframe Mobile, Team NINJA、 sonic dream team, Hi-Fi Audio Sprint, remorse, and more.
