It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly two years since DC Studios co-head James Gunn The first batch of film and television projects were announced. everything starts with biocommandoA seven-episode animated series that tells the story of a secret team of imprisoned monsters recruited to carry out missions too dangerous for humans. early release biocommandowe had the chance to chat with the executive producers and showrunners Dean Lorre.
During our conversation, Lore discussed how he Harley Quinn It was adult animation that led him to this project, and how Creatures set the stage for Gunn’s vision for the future of the DC Universe.
Watch our video interview below:
Taimur Dar: You spent many years at Warner Bros. Animation working on projects such as Kite man and Harley Quinn. James Gunn makes no secret of how much he loves Harley Quinn.
Dean Lorre: He is among them!
Taimur Dar: Yes, he guest-starred in season three. I’m sure this made some impression on you, but how did you get involved? biocommando.
Dean Lorre: James wrote the first four episodes before taking on the role of DC co-president. This is a passion project of his. yes he was Harley. When he took over as co-president and decided to produce the film first, it all happened through Warner Bros. Animation. Peter Girardi who is responsible Harley and kite man He is also an executive officer of biocommando. I’m there because I’m running kite man Season 1 and Harley Season 5. He said: “We need someone to run this. James loves you [and] like Harley“. I said, “Great. I’d love to do it. That’s how I got into it. It was a surprise because I’ve never hosted a show that I didn’t write. Luckily, the script was great.”
Taimur Dar: There are a lot of great Easter eggs and cameos for DC Comics fans. Particularly in episode three, we delve into the GI Robot’s past. I’ll defer to you as to how much you want to reveal. How much should viewers read into these cameos? Are there any potential by-products from these?
Dean Lorre: I won’t read too much into them. I would say this series is considered canon. James was very specific about the characters he wanted in a given scene, even if they were just background. I think he was very careful to make sure it fit the world he envisioned for the DCU. It doesn’t mean we’re going to see a specific person perform.
Taimur Dar: On the contrary, there are elements biocommando This will lead to some upcoming projects from DC Studios such as Waller live action album, superman movies, even paradise lost The series focuses on Paradise Island. Apparently, James Gunn is overseeing this. You work with other teams (e.g. superman Movie?
Dean Lorre: we got some designs superman reserve [it] Consistent with what we are doing. So we got some. Other than that, we don’t work with many other shows. But the design of Belle Reve is based on the design of the movie. We try to keep things consistent.
Taimur Dar: On the theme of consistency, Frank Grillo makes his debut as Rick Flagg Sr. in this animated series. We know he’ll be reprising his role in the movie superman movies and peacemaker Season 2. At New York Comic Con, he mentioned he couldn’t copy his hairstyle biocommando For live action, but hopefully in future projects. With Rick Flag Sr. and other characters, how much did you try to base your designs on the likeness of the actors?
Dean Lorre: We didn’t really overuse their similarities. I’m trying to think of how to answer. The actors we cast for the show were hopefully actors who could play the live-action version. In a way, I guess there’s a little bit of leakage. If you look at them, there’s really no one in this group. [Laughs]. The Bride is probably the closest, obviously Rick Flagg. Grillo does look a bit like him, but with black hair.
Taimur Dar: Being a James Gunn project, it’s no surprise that the soundtrack is top-notch. Like Quentin Tarantino, Gunn is a master of using song as part of storytelling. The series contains quite a bit of Eastern European punk rock, with Gogol Brothel and other genres from bands like the Dresden Dolls. Were there any difficulties in getting the music?
Dean Lorre: It was effortless and all of these song choices were in the script. All of this was decided before we even started working on the series. Gogol brothel, we see them in one episode.
Taimurdar: Yes! In the second episode, there are flashbacks to The Bride and Frankenstein.
Dean Lorre: You see. For those people it’s easy. They’re happy to do it. It’s such a breeze.
Taimur Dar: What I liked about Season 1 peacemaker That’s why it both stands on its own and leaves plenty of open space for a second season. i have a feeling biocommando This is the same case as it being a standalone, but if it performs well enough, we could see a second season. Are there any plans for a second season, or do we have to wait and see?
Dean Lorre: We really want to do a second season. Now, it depends on when James has time to write it. We really want to do a second season. You’ll see some of our thoughts on what this might look like at the end of Season 1, Episode 7.
biocommando Two episodes will premiere on Max on Thursday, December 5, followed by one episode per week until January 9.
