from the very beginning Transform into a girl Volume, the art by Marley Zarcone is wonderful. Zarkone’s characters are rounded and simple, reminding me of the established styles of old times. Archie comic, reinforcing the early feel of teenage adventure, but the weirdness and fluidity of the page layout emphasizes the strange nature of alien birds taking over human bodies. Inks by Ande Parks were used throughout much of the series, maintaining the fine lines of Zarcone’s finished art.
Kelly Fitzpatrick works in a gorgeous primary color and sometimes psychedelic palette. It really helps with the sometimes confusing visuals and old fashioned dot approach. There are also some interesting narration boxes provided by Saida Temofonte. The book features backup drawn by Jamie Coe, playing with the fluidity of time established at the beginning of this arc.
Of all the books under DC’s Young Animal imprint, shadow, changing woman Works from Castellucci, Zarcone, Coe, Parks, Fitzpatrick and Temofonte, as well as much of the earlier work from the same group, are probably the most deceptively straightforward. It’s a coming-of-age story filled with body possession, madness, and intergalactic warfare that ultimately touches on complex issues of identity, friendship, xenophobia, and coping with change.
