Sega has another live-action movie coming soon, but it’s not Persona or anything you might have heard of.
As superhero movies have declined slightly over the past few years, Hollywood has found a new drying well: video games. In recent years, we’ve seen more and more adaptations, with the likes of The Last of Us, Fallout, and most recently the incredible Borderlands movie. Of course, a big contributor to the video game movie renaissance is 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, a great movie that made a lot of money. Following the show’s success, sequels and a Knuckles spin-off have followed, and with another movie set to hit theaters this December, it’s clear Sega is very happy with its live-action take. In addition, Sega will also launch the “Yakuza” TV series in October this year. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter , its next live-action film will be… uh, The Eternal Champion?

I suspect that if you are, like me, under the age of 35, this game may not be that familiar to you, and I wouldn’t blame you. Originally released in 1993 on the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis to everyone in the US), Eternal Champions was a fighting game produced by Sega that attempted to capitalize on the popularity of Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat. It sees various key figures from history being pulled from their time by the titular Eternal Champion, each dying before being taken away and offered the chance to compete in a tournament that keeps them alive.
It definitely sounds like the plot of a fighting game, and is clearly modeled after Street Fighter and specifically Mortal Kombat, but hey, the ’90s were a crazy time. It was followed by a sequel and a few spin-offs, but nothing else in nearly 30 years, so it’s an odd one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , the film adaptation is produced by Skydance and will be written by Derek Connolly, whose credits include “Jurassic World,” “Pokémon Detective Pikachu,” “Planet War: The Rise of Skywalker” and the upcoming live-action Zelda movie. So, a bit of a mixed bag, but definitely leaning more toward video game movies.
There isn’t much information about the movie yet, so you’ll just have to wait and see what happens with it. Maybe if Sega was willing to back away from games like this, you’d still get your live-action character shows or movies. perhaps.
