Scott Stuber found his post-Netlfix job, relaunching the legendary United Artists studio brand under Amazon MGM.
During the multi-year partnership, Stuber will finance and produce the films through his upcoming production company, which will be distributed theatrically and on Prime streaming through United Artists. Stuber will be involved in all UA releases, even those not produced by his company.
Stuber and his new company will also have a first-look deal with Amazon-MGM and be headquartered in the company’s Culver City offices.
Stuber joins Amazon-MGM after announcing earlier this year that he was stepping down as head of film at rival tech giant Netflix. Under Stuber’s direction, Netflix’s feature-length business has aggressively moved into blockbusters, attracting filmmakers like Zack Snyder and the Russo brothers, as well as award-winning directors like Martin Scorsese. Stuber, an executive at Universal Pictures, left production company Bluegrass Films to join Netflix in 2017.
As for United Artists, the century-old brand founded by Charlie Chaplin, DW Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, this is the latest incarnation. United Artists was acquired by MGM in the 1980s and recently rebranded as distribution agency United Artists Releasing in 2019, a partnership between MGM and Megan Elison’s Annapurna . When Amazon purchased MGM, United Artists was folded into the studio until the Stuber project was revived.
Stuber said of today’s announcement: “During this dynamic and transformative time in our industry, I’m excited for the opportunity to work with partners who are committed to telling stories that engage and resonate with audiences around the world. I look forward to working with great films Producers collaborate to create a variety of films utilizing original story concepts and the incredible existing IP libraries of MGM and United Artists.
