As The Beat reported earlier this year, senior IDW editor Scott Dunbill He resigned from the publisher back in April, just ahead of the wave of layoffs. He’s been announcing his next steps ever since, and now we’ve got confirmation that he’s starting his own publishing company called ACT 4. Revealing initial publication slate.
The news was teased on social media, with the logo designed by the one and only Chip Kidd.
Denbier comments: “The goal of Act Four is to create books—comics, graphic novels, collections, artist editions—that are held together by the quality of the content. It’s exciting and a little scary to make this move , but I loved the books I was making, and it was time to bet on myself.
More information will be revealed here!

As we mentioned before, Dunbeer invented the artist’s edition format, and it’s been imitated a lot…we’re sure he had no shortage of work opportunities, but he bet on himself and started working on his own. So why not? From 1995 until earlier this year, Dunbier led many of WildStorm/DC and IDW Publishing’s most popular projects. In addition to inventing Absolute and Artist’s Editions, he is the editor of Alan Moore’s Best American Comics series, the Cliffhanger imprint, and Dalvin Cook’s Parker graphic novel series. His collection of Eisner, Harvey and Ringo Awards exceeds shelf space. With a resume like that, it was time for him to start his own show.
The company is rolling out as he planned in a social media post
First, let me once again thank everyone for their incredible support since I announced that I would be leaving IDW Publishing after 16 years. It was a tough choice, I’ve had two jobs over the past 29 years, first at WildStorm Productions (later DC/WildStorm) and then at IDW. I don’t make this change lightly.
I want to say a few things.
Leaving IDW was my decision alone. I will always have a soft spot for the company that has been my home for so long. I will miss most of my former colleagues terribly. They do an amazing job and I care deeply about them. But it’s time to go.
As of today, I’m excited about the future. I decided to do something that might be a little crazy, I was going to start my own publishing company. I won’t talk directly about my publishing plans yet, or even reveal the name of my company. Over the next few weeks I will be submitting documents to create it, and I will be updating regularly via social media.
Assuming everything goes according to plan, my goal is to release my first book at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
all the best,
Scott Dunbier
