Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman knew it wouldn’t be easy to get Madonna’s permission to use her 1989 hit “Like a Prayer” in a film. Deadpool and Wolverine.
The two actors, along with director Sean Levy, were recently interviewed by Andy Cohen on SiriusXM, via peoplethey actually had to visit the iconic singer to ask her to license the song.
“It really involved a personal visit with Madonna, where we showed her using ‘Like a Prayer,'” Levy explains.
“Also, let’s preface this with the fact that they didn’t license it — Madonna didn’t just license this song, especially that song,” Reynolds added. “Asking for it is a big deal, using it is certainly even more important. We went over and met her and showed her how, where and why it is used.
Levy noted that they felt like “meeting royalty” during their visit. Reynolds even joked that he had to ask one of Madonna’s team members how to properly address her.
“Like can I just say ‘Madonna’?” Free man the actor recalled. “Like, ‘Hi Madonna, I’m Ryan.'”
The visit ended up being a great success and the “Material Girls” artist gave them permission to use the song and provided Deadpool and Wolverine Use Like A Prayer to write some helpful notes for the scene.
“She gave great instructions,” Reynolds said. “She saw it, I’m not kidding, [she said]”You need to do this.” Damn if she wasn’t so good.
“We actually went into a new recording session within 48 hours to complete this note,” Levy added. “It makes the sequence better.”
Deadpool and WolverineReynolds and Jackman’s characters join forces on a new mission, which will be released on July 26.
