Sometimes a TV show surprises you so unexpectedly that you can’t stop thinking about it for hours, days, or even weeks after the episode airs. latest episode The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power So I did, and the moment was instantly etched in my mind, where it stayed for nearly a week. Amazon Prime Series Season 2 is a significant progress Season 1the storyline is tighter and the stakes are higher – and while it’s still a little too meandering for my liking, it’s a very entertaining series to watch every week. But so far, nothing has stuck with me more than the closing theme of the seventh-to-last episode of the season, “Destined to Die.”
If you’re the kind of person who stops the show as soon as the end credits roll, you may have missed this. After Adar takes Galadriel’s ring from Elrond, the screen suddenly turns black and a violent drum beat sounds. Before you have a chance to read the first subtitles, a throaty, strong metallic voice begins chanting. Yes, a metal song is playing Lord of the Rings TV series, it’s really great.
The song is called “Damrod’s Last Ballad” and was written by series composer Bear McCreary (the same guy behind the music in Damrod’s Last Ballad ) Mars reboot series), sung by legendary musician Jens Kidman. Kidman is the lead singer and co-founder of Swedish extreme metal band Meshuggah, which is widely regarded as one of the best modern metal bands of all time.
Named after the troll Damrod, the song tells the story of Damrod, the troll who joined Adar’s army to lay siege to Eregion, and wiped the ground with the city and the many elves who defended it, until Elrdon, Arondir, and Gil-galad stepped in and killed the guy. . Naturally, this ass-kicking troll (who apparently eats dragon bones) would be the perfect subject for a heavy metal song. I mean, look at these shit lyrics:
In the dank mould, the troll sat alone
no friends or relatives
Trolls chew skin, raw calves and calves
Tear the flesh from the fetid dragon bones
With a deep, raucous laugh
He stood up from the stone seat
From the dark cave, bloodthirsty desire
Take a relaxing walk in the mountains
I’ve been playing “Damrod’s Last Ballad” on repeat since episode seven aired last week. It was such a lovely surprise and such an unexpected thing to hear at the end ring of power Interlude – but only work. The relationship between high fantasy and metal goes back a long way, so it’s so brilliant that McRae chose to write such a badass song and hire a legend of the genre to sing it. I’m pretty sure I hit just about every lift in the gym today while having a blast through my headphones.
ring of power The Season 2 finale will be released on Amazon Prime on Thursday, October 3.
