This week’s throwback trailer is for the 1972 psychological horror film other directed by Robert Mulliganadapted from the novel by Tom Tryon.
Set in rural Connecticut in the 1930s, the film tells the story of identical twins Niles and Holland Perry, whose bond seems unbreakable. However, after a series of strange and tragic events occur in their family and community, it becomes clear that one of the boys is not who he seems.
Niles, the more sensitive and introspective of the two, often communicates with his late father’s spirit through telepathic games taught by his Russian grandmother.
Under the influence of his seemingly mischievous and vicious brother Holland, Niles begins to blur the lines between reality and imagination, and the “game” takes on sinister overtones.
The plot reveals that Holland died in an accident some time ago, and Niles has been projecting his brother’s personality and carrying out dark deeds in Holland’s name.
The film is a slow exploration of madness.
